Sorry to hear about the failure. That is something that
potentially could result in your premature death if it
happened in traffic. Do yourself a favour and consider the
full cost of buying cheap gear. Failures like this take away
the joy of cycling and for a very small additional cost you
can get something that you will not be able to break.

You forgot to read the small print on the inside whorl of
the crank that says, "Warning! Crank not to be used for
pedalling".

Friend of mine snapped a pedal off a Giant and sued them
for his broken ankle. Ended up with 30 grand after paying
the vultures.

I'm not feeling litigious, just sore. I must have snapped at
least 5 cranks in the last few years. Doesn't help that I'm
193cm, 110kg and quite strong, so I tend to power on in top
gear too much. Last time I spent $400 on good cranks the
bike got stolen within 2 months. Still ... $30k would pay
off a few debts ...

is it a MTB or road bike?

either way, a good set of XT cranks will work. Ask at a bike shop for some old XT or XTR cranks. They will be banged up and you should be able to get them cheap and wont look conspicuous on your bike.
Agreed that your size has alot to do with it, but i was breaking heaps of stuff for years (im 6'5" and have weighed between 85-85kg..granted not in your weight division!) and then i started concentrating on my pedalling technique and trying to keep a nice, even pedalling action and i have been putting less stress on the bike and breaking less equipment. Your size will always make it hard to not break stuff, but you can minimise it.

Yeah, I wanna know how you do it.. I am 100kg and have what
most people would call "big legs" and a reasonable pace usually but I ain't snapped nothing!?

I have a nasty tendency to take off at the lights in top
gear, so it's no wonder the cheap stuff keeps breaking.
Hippy, you and I are probably around the same size, but I
suspect the fact that I have done martial arts with a bit
of plyometric training for the last 14 years contributes to
my crank snapping ability! (And no, I don't jump backwards
into trees!)

Ah.. good point. I'm a 'wind it up' kinda rider - not the fastest
take off, but look out if I've got some room to crank for a bit..
(doh! race secrets revealed ;-) ).
