It may well have been safe enough to do 70 instead of 60 or 80 instead of 70 if it was dual
carriageway. What was clearly not safe was to race another car at speeds which no doubt greatly
exceeded the limit whilst under the influence of alcohol as well. Those who like to see things in
black and white ignore the fact that in between there are many shades of grey. It isn't always safe
to travel at the limit, it isn't always unsafe to exceed
it. Everything depends on the circumstances.

You can exceed the national speed limit and still be a lot slower than a BMW driver trying to race.
It's possible that they could have done 80mph safely (it's also possible that they couldn't - but
that they caused a crash when (presumably) going much faster doesn't show that).

Don't imagine the speed limit was considered by these [censored]. I'm more interested in what
punishment they get. Poor lorry driver has lost his life and his family a loved one.

Back in the 1980s I drove a van for Boeing. There were no speed cameras then and you'd be amazed
what a Transit van could do, given an aircraft spare tyre over the back axle for stability. I was
told the airline uniforms that were passing even me were cabin crew rather than pilots - their
schedules were tighter, and anyway commercial pilots are selected for following rules exactly.

It became common knowledge than some cabin-crew schedules actually depended on them speeding on the
M25 between Heathrow and Gatwick, and a clampdown eventually followed.

AFAIK, the lorry driver died soon after the accident and one of the BMW drivers was over the limit.
All six lanes were blocked and both BMW's were written off.

I was alluding the recent case of the pilots getting slopped up in Oslo and then attempting to fly
