broadband Internet access would be common. Can you read newsgroups at a
public library with broadband access if signing up for it at home is
outside your budget? Even if you can't use Usenet directly via broadband,
which is hard to believe, there's always http://groups.google.com to get
your Usenet fix.

This isn't at all unreasonable and I know there are many here who should do a

Can you do more off-line? I.e., on my newsreader I can choose which
bodies I want to download. It also gives an indication of how large
each post is which becomes a criterion for selection.

So, you can log in, download the headers, log off, choose the ones you
want to retrieve, reply to previously downloaded ones (including
writing new ones) at your leisure off-line, log in, download the ones
you've selected/retrieve new headers/send your own posts, and log off
again.

Of course, it would be ideal if people trimmed and kept to the topic,
but working off-line might help too.

Reading via google is much slower than downloading posts enmass and
reading off line.

First, get yourself a different newsreader! (For instance) Agent will
let you download headers only, you can trim them > then get the
bodies. It also lets you know how large each message is, so you can
trim headers according to size. After that, you can do all of your
reading/replying off line and send your replies as a group when you go
back online.

Secondly, you don't have to be held hostage by a dial-up ISP just
because you want to read Usenet. There are free and pay news servers
that you can subscribe to, which are accessible via broadband. If you
need any suggestions, we've discussed that matter in the not so
distant past... just ask!

Mine too for a different reason - courtesy. I was thinking how I could post
a reminder about courtesy and the minor art form of trimming posts without
bringing down a load of [censored]. Thank you for bringing the subject up! Most
people here either do not know that they should trim posts or don't think it
applies to them. Some very nice people tend to lack the simple courtesy of
trimming. They will make a reader go through a long post to find a small
simple sentence reply. As you can see in this thread, most have missed the
main point.

It isn't difficult so TRIM YOUR DAMNED POSTS!

Uh, what is your point exactly? Rona clearly stated that sloppy posting
habits will cause her to avoid the posts of those who insist upon exercising
such behavior. *How* she accesses Usenet is absolutely *no* concern of
yours...

Just so you know, a number of telecoms in "heavily industrialized nation(s)"
do NOT have free unlimited local calls, *everyone* is charged by the unit,
an ISP can offer "unlimited" access for so much per month, but the
subscriber is still going to get hit with additional telephone charges
regardless...

And I agree with her initial point - I get real tired of reading X00 lines
of quoted post, only to have the poster add a line or three of their own
comments at the end. I've killfiled a number of Usenet posters who engage
in this bad habit, I do my best to trim posts, it only takes a few seconds
of my time and makes it easier for others to read my posts (whether they
*want* to is a whole 'nother topic, lol :-).

Not trimming one's posts is every bit as rude as top - posting IMNSHO...

And in any case Google is just about the poorest and slowest way around to
access Usenet, it's no panacea for her concerns.
