I wonder if anyone else shares my inclination to sleep hard and long? I notice that on my days off work, I tend to go to bed late around 2.00 a.m. and rise just before noon. All in all, I sleep a lot and feel better with close to 10 hours in the sack.
I wonder if so much sleep would screw up my fitness or whether my body simply needs the sleep seeing as I ride quite a lot.

The more sleep the better for me. it all rounds out, up early one day, sleep in the next. on my days off i stay up as late as i can to get the most out of it.
My new hobby been keeping me up regardless of work or ride. my other hobby is a couch potato in front of my TV with surround sound (if you want a bad ass subwoofer get an SVS)I think the extra sleep hours are good when you can get them. i think sleep would better your fitness rather then take it. my coach always told me to get as much sleep as i could.

I've always been a big sleeper. I read in the paper some study that claimed too much sleep can lead to Parkinsons.
Myself, I work by night and sleep sometimes 6 hours. On free days, when I have time out, I will sleep 10 hours. Last night I slept a staggering 11 hours which is a heck of a lot!
Fortunately, if I have to sometimes get up at 7.00 a.m. I can do it. I drink some coffee and then get on the bike and off I go.
Off the bike I'm lazy. I lounge about watching T.V. and munching chocolate but on the bike I train like a madman.zaskar said:

My equilibrium state is coma. Getting up from a chair to get a drink requires thought and preparation. I typically turn out the light at 3 AM and my dog usually forces me to get up at about noon, much to my displeasure. Yet I can overcome my inertia most every day and train hard. I marvel at this.
I have read that most adults are sleep-deprived. 8-10 hours is what most of us need, apparently, for optimim health. And if one trains hard, sleep becomes even more important.
I'm also a type-B personality. The type-A are the ones who can't sleep late no matter what, rush through their meals, etc.

10hrs isnt too much, good if you are riding alot-gives muscles time to regenerate etc.
i am a type A personality, i cant sleep past 9am, it just feels like im wasting the day otherwise. im usually up at 6 and off to the gym daily at 7.30/8 (despite having all day to go ). im about to go to uni so my type A may slowly turn to type B due to late nights, drinking and general student lazyness!
-
I do not know how you all do it
I am generally in bed for 10 and asleep by 11 and then up at 5 if I train or 6 if not. If I sleep later then I just feel drugged and slow.

I can honestly sleep for 14 hours at a time if I get the chance. 🙄 -

Paula Radcliff apparently sleeps 13hours on a training day. broken up over the day with the bulk being oovernight (obviously) and then has an afternoon nap to aid recovery!
Me... I am lucky if i get 7hours weekday or not. 🙁

Statistics show that most heart attacks occur in the morning. Therefore it's best to play it safe and sleep until at least noon. -
I get 7 or 8 hours at the most each night.
For me sleeping in until 7:30 is great. I can't stay in bed much more than 8:00 and when I do get to sleep that late, it almost feels like work to stay in bed that long.
-
I would love to stay and chat but am off to bed now as it's 21.45 - up to train at 05.00 😄
You guys are soo lazy.. (maybe you dont have kids either though..)

Your handle belies your wisdom. It is also important to take the long way to get anywhere since "they" tell us most accidents occur within a few mile radius from home... -
Check this out! Today I rose at 13.00 p.m.!! I mean, I go to work and everything but it was a day off. I went to bed at 2.00 a.m. and rose just before 13.00 p.m. so that's an incredible 11 hours snoozing. :p
Mind you, I did wake about 4.00 a.m with itchy feet and kept stepping over the dog, back and forth to the bathroom.
I do train very very hard. I've cycled a lot today and thrown in loads of hills. But, boy, can I sleep. My family think I'm lazy and all talk about me for lying in. -
if sleeping undisturbed...you will sleep for as long as your body needs....adults do need on average of 8-10 hours of sleep...some may need more and some may need less....the real problem is "sleep debt"....lets say you're a person that needs 8 hours of sleep to get fully rested...tonight you go out late and get up early getting only 6hrs of sleep...your body now needs 2 extra hours to catch up...do this two nights in a row and you now you need 4 extra...so instead of 8hrs to be fully rested in this example you would now need 12 hours of sleep...sleep deprivation is a major issue in todays society...and is the cause of many negative health issues....stage 4 and REM sleep is when your body repairs itself...deny your body good sleep long enough and it will take over for itself(try driving at 4am on a highway after being up all night)....watch an infant or a toddler, they get to a point where sleep debt is greater than alertness and boom! out they go...when people get the right amount of sleep you'd be amazed at how much better they feel.
-
That explains my situation then. I sometimes only sleep 5 hours but I do a lot of training. On my days off, I then sleep at least 10 hours solid. I feel as if it's doing me good as well. It's refreshing and seems to ward off illnesses and colds.

Definitely. And you should always put on a condom immediately after having unsafe sex. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of penicillin.

I think Pharmr is right!I ALWAYS sleep at least 8 hours. EVERY night. Sometimes when I am training VERY hard I take a nap in the afternoon (30-60 min.). And sometimes i sleep 9 hours if I feel very tired. But I never feel I have to CATCH up. I just can't do my workouts if I do not get my sleep - found out a lot of years ago, and have stuck with it EVER since.
For me it is VERY simple. If I HAVE to be up at 7, I have to get to bed and be ready to sleep at 11.

If that is so, my debt is larger than the USA's budget deficit - no point in me worrying about it 'cos' I could never pay it back...

How do you guys cope with family / wives etc? Or perhaps look at it the other way round - how do they cope with your sleep requirements?
If I want to go to bed at 21h my girl gets really annoyed. It doesn't help that I seem to need about 10hrs a night and she can get by on 4....
Falling asleep in cinemas and restaurants is not doing my lovelife any favours....

I'm generally a 4-6 hr / night sleeper. Too much else going on and, when it's not, I get up anyway.
