A quick question for the wrenchers, if that's OK...
My front der, a XT of about 18 months vintage, has developed enough play that it rattles alarmingly, even on smooth roads, and the cage will move about 2-3 mm in all directions when in middle ring. It shifts acceptably (just), but that rattle is really starting to annoy me. Is it possible to fix this, or is this derailleur bound for the great spare-parts-bin in the sky?
I'll probably replace it with LX - is there an alternative?
The topswing death rattle eh? Buy a conventional type one (frame permitting) and never have this problem again. Either XT or LX conventional are very durable, SRAM do front mechs too but I've no experience with those.

Yup - I'm with Andy here! Was going through top-swing front mechs like crazy - one every 6 mos. to a year - got myself an LX conventional swing type, and 18 mos. + later, it's still as solid as it was out of the box.
If your frame can take it (some frames, especially full suspension, aren't able to accommodate them!), put one on and forget your front mech woes.

I really like my Sram triggers, been riding them all this season. The action is faster than Shimano, the thumb/thumb triggering is easy to use, everyone I talked to who has made the switch seems to prefer these.
