Sad to say that the Aultguish Inn also seemed to be going the same way
on my last visit. Despite there being only three other customers in
the bar and it being 25mins after the advertised "meals served
from..." time we were curtly told on attempting to order four bar
meals "You'll have to wait, I'm a bit busy. The kitchen isn't open
yet." Needless to say, thanks to that attitude to customer relations I
haven't felt inclined to go back.

been nearly so good IMHO. There's a wee hotel/pub that does very good
bar meals in Carbost though. Better value, and a much friendlier place
IME (not been in for about 3 years, it's probably all changed now,
though I hope not).

bacon rolls ? no but a Brie and cranberry baguette was on offer at
£4.95 each. Chips and burgers for kids but not for adults. these
places are in danger of biting the hand that feeds them if you know
what I mean.

Looking forward to the Skye Corbetts though !

We did the West Highland Way a fortnight ago, and arrived at
Kingshouse at about 10:50 AM. They opened doors at 11:00 but couldn't
rustle up any grub until 12:00, not even a bread roll..

(We had deliberately camped on Rannoch Moor, rather than pushing on to
Kingshouse, as I found an equally inflexible and unhelpful stance when
I visited KHH the first time I did the WHW!

Agree about Slig too. Good beer, poor food. You can get breakfast in
the hotel for £8 per head, for a piddly amount. Staff in bar and hotel
all miserable!

In a similar vein, I strongly recommend The Ice Factor in Kinlochleven
(also on our recent WHW trip). They do a Mountaineers Breakfast - 2
eggs, 2 sausages, 2 rashers bacon, 2 slices toast, mushrooms,
tomatoes, all for £4.95. Freshly cooked and very much appreciated!!!

First time I stopped at the Kingshouse (1991?) they were great. Was
doing the WHW, and camped their overnight, and they did a breakfast for
us (though said we'd have to wait until after the hotel guests had
finished theirs) - don't think they normally did that for campers.

When I was there in 2001 in the bar round the back they had a haggis
pizza on the menu. Barman bet me £50 I couldn't eat a whole one... I
declined as I reckoned they'd dump a whole haggis on top if I'd said
yes! Very nice anyway.

Last time, 2003, just stopped as car had broken down in a wee bit of a
blizzard, and again they were very helpful, letting us sit in the
residents lounge near the fire while trying to fix the broken electrical
switch that was causing the problems. Haggis pizza was off the menu
then though :-(

On the whole I've always found the staff friendly there.

But the Sligachan Hotel, yes, food is just bog standard reheated frozen
stuff by the taste of it when I was there last year.

It's a shame when these places change. I was very disappointed when I
went back to the Queene Anne (I think) at Botallack (nr St Just in
Cornwall). Hadn't been for many a year but I remembered it havinng
bucket loads of character - all gone now, now just an average food pub
like any other. I won't be making an effort to go back. Sigh.

For anyone venturing into East Sutherland I wholeheartedly recommend the
pink cafe in Helmsdale called La Mirage. Excellent value, proper fresh
cooked (locally Caught) fish and chips, good portions, friendly service
(especially if you get the proprietress who always smiles), other nice
dishes on the menu including fresh local shellfish and all at reasonable
prices - licenced too.

You can't miss La Mirage, it's the only shocking pink shop in the village.

Thanks for the tips re other places, all now saved to memory for future use.

Its been pretty dreadful for a while now, as you say since the barn.

At least they serve decent beer though.

I had a bad experience at Kilmelfort recently - good hill area BTW!
South of Oban.

A caff, mid morning fully open etc, was suddenly "closed" when I came
down off the hill.

Meanwhile a short way to the East, is Dalavich on the shores of Loch
Awe, there is a caff in the post office, and its very good indeed....

Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum is very good. All the produce is local (or
from named sources) and freshly cooked. Basically it's a fish and chip

this spring. Their attitude was appalling: I won't be returning.

It is indeed. My father was very excited as he told me how he and a
pal arrived at the Kingshouse late one evening back in the mid 50s,
hungry and cold, and how they were willingly fed, and allowed to
sleep in the kitchen. They were trying to walk to JOG from LE, but
they didn't get much further than Glencoe. He asked me to tell the
current owners all about it on my trip last spring, but it was clear
very quickly that there wouldn't have been any interest in the tale.

Ah, well - good things change, and other good things replace them.

We stayed at the inn in Carbost this week (a wet jaunt around the
Cuillins). Food was good pub grub and msot of the time a couple of real
ales were on tap.

Seconded. I stayed in the attached hostel last year, some friends
were in the B&B accomodation. All very comfortable.
And the distillery's only yards down the road.
