What is the preferred for lower back and hamstring work? I do still
legged deadlifts but I wondered how different these things are....

Both are good but you'll get more benefit from the deadlifts which
must be the best single exercise among all the many alternatives.
Both will play havoc with backs if good form is not strictly observed.

Actually I've been playing havoc with my back quite bit just lately - I
think it is between L4 and L5

Use a longer iron or change to your number 4 wood! ;o)

Thanks for the response. I do normal deadlifts in addition and just love
them. And I meant to type stiff rather than still. I just washed my
hands and cant do a thing with them 🙂

Good advice! Second to havoc, that is my favourite game

I'm not a great fan of the stiff or straight legged deadlift, which I
believe can have a propensity for damaging the backs of those not
experienced in correct form.

It's 'fore' for me, for what it's worth. ;o)

I prefer good mornings, fwiw. It feels to me that pushing back into the bar
with my shoulders helps me keep better form (helps me keep the arch in my
back) than having it drag my shoulders down. But that could be total
fantasy.

Exercise is a dirty word. Whenever I hear it, I wash my mouth out with
chocolate. ("Ladi"😉

Absolutely. Get a good trainer to show you how to do these movements.
A stiff legged deadlift can be particularly risky for one's lower
back. Consider a semi stiff legged DL variant, such as a Romanian.
Good Mornings are another great exercise, but even here the knees are
slightly bent for better balance.
Dr. Colgan, in The New Power Program, describes Good Mornings and
stiff-legged lifts as "dill-brain" exercises that frequently cause
herniated discs. I think he is referring to instances where people
lock their knees.

I just added weights to my chest expander workout, and I do both the
Good Mornings, and the Straight Legged, Straight Back deadlifts, as
shown here:

Good luck. I can only advise you to work with a good trainer.
