I've come across some BMX style single sprocket freewheels, and I'm thinking of converting a mountain bike to single speed for the winter. But the freewheels don't seem to have any mechanism to remove them. Is this common? Is there something I can do so that I might be able to remove it from my hub?
Its just a cheap wheel, so I don't mind permanently attaching one of these to it, but it would be nice to be able to remove it.

I am not familiar with all the BMX stuff out there, but Shimano and others use a 4-prong remover. ACS may have one that uses a Shimano BB spline tool?

I think this one is pretty old. I'm not sure what you mean by dog, though. I put a picture of it up at [1], it looks like somehting might be able to fit in the two round holes on each side. But they aren't very deep.

The other side is less interesting then the front, that's why I didn't post it before, but I put its picture up to [1]. It doesn't look like the image you posted, there are no slots for any sort of removal tool it seems. I guess some could be machined in?

I'm not sure from your photo, but I think I might be seeing one notch under the "R" in BRAND and a second above the "C" in CO. on the opposite side? If so, that freewheel might take the old SunTour 2-notch BMX freewheel tool:

The two round holes are for disassembling the freewheel. There should be notches (dogs) in the threaded portion for a remover. Since these are not visible, I would guess that they have been stripped off.

The classic design, before Suntour's 4-notch EZ-Off which is widely copied now, has no reasonable nondestructive removal procedure.
Some have very small nicks in the body which can be struck firmly with a cold chisel to break them free.

The two indentations open the cover plate - which you do not want to do. (Anticlockwise if you're hellbent)
This standard model freewheel isn't a BMX component. It's a roadster freewheel and doesn't have removal provision. They are used until failure and then broken for removal.

But, but, you'd have to tear it apart if you broke a spoke. That doesn't seem reasonable.

I just today replaced a spoke without removing the freewheel or the tire. Slip the nipple in by threading it backwards on a spoke, peel the tire to one side, push the nipple in and then unscrew your spoke. Insert the replacement spoke through the root of a freewheel tooth. It doesn't require much of a curve.

You can use these with a hammer and punch (usually LH thread) to unscrew the bearing race. The freewheel will fall apart, and the remaining bit will respond to treatment with vise or pipewrench
