I just use an MTB crankset and take off the two small chainrings. I used to
use an XTR splined crankset mounted on an Ultegra bottom bracket, which gave
exactly the correct chainline. When that crank bent in a crash I replaced it
with a Deore LX square taper crankset on a Dura-Ace 103mm bottom bracket,
which also gives the correct chainline.
For riding in Australia with just a saddlebag I've always found a 46t
chainring about right. It gives a big enough top gear to keep up with the
bunch on training rides and a small enough gear to get up the hills here. On
a recent tour in Switzerland I replaced the 46 with a 36 and was glad that I
did, as a couple of the mountains I climbed averaged 13-14% gradient over
the whole climb and had sections > 20% gradient (max 28% on Rigi Kulm).

Hiyas,
my ISP's news server didnt seem to be propagating, so I thought Id try
again from here (cycling forums).
Stronglight's single cranksets dont seem to be very widely distributed
in aus, and apparently rohloffs like as straight a chainline as you can
provide so I was seeking find something as appropriate as possible.
There are the stronglight impact, mygal and aero(al), are there any
better available alternatives? Im looking for 46-50t, with the ability
to pick and chose if possible=)
