Simple computer with cadence and large numbers?

  1. Hello All:

    I am looking for a simple computer with cadence that has large easy to read numbers. This is for a
    laboratory application so weight and other features are irrelevant to me. What would you guys
    recommend? I guess this is something I should know, but I have not had a computer with cadence since
    my Cateye solar died in the late 80's.

  3. Almost every cyclocomputer has big enough characters to read... so you'd be fine with almost
    anything in that respect. Some are a bit bigger than others, and some seem to be of higher
    quality LCD's.

    Depending on what you are doing in this laboratory, you might want to consider a wireless computer,
    then the supervisor could hold the computer or keep it with him to take notes and readings. No idea
    if that applies to what you're trying to do though..

    I don't know exactly what you are trying to do but if cadence is the only value you need, take ANY
    cyclometer, set the speed scale to kmh and the wheel circumference to 1667 mm or 166.7cm (some may
    not allow a wheel setting this low). Then just take the speed multiplied by 10. A speed reading of
    10.0 kmh corresponds to 100 rpm.

    aka the VDO 8.0C. i like it as well. the VDO version is a different color but otherwise identical
    (VDO makes them for performance). very intuitively laid out. it's my favourite cheap (not ergobrain,
    flightdeck, fancy) computer actually.

    Your idea sound pretty complicated. All the OP wanted was a simple computer that had large numbers
    and cadence...

    Setting the wheel circumference to a different number so that you can then take a direct reading of
    RPM (moving the decimal) is complicated? OK, if you say so. You're an art history major, right?;-)

    He stated that he wanted to use it for lab work without stating what that was. The point being that
    it is possible to measure cadence (or rpm) with a device not intended to measure rpm. It just opens
    up some possiblities. If the goal is to measure cadence of the crank *_on a bicycle_* then a
    traditional cyclometer with a cadence function would fill the bill just fine.

  9. Thanks, I like that idea. I would like use an Avocet because they have such a nice clean display.
    But you mentioned that your method would not work with Avocet. Do they have more than one magnet?
    Can you suggest a modification to allow use of an Avocet?

    Actually, I misspoke. An Avocet could work if it can be calibrated as I described. However, the
    primary difficulty lies in the fact that the Avocets I am familiar with use a sensor mechanism that
    includes a ring that must be mounted around the axis of rotation. This is in contrast to most other
    cyclometers, where the sensor is nothing more than a combination of a magnet and a switch, and the
    magnet triggers the switch once per revolution. This latter setup provides far more flexibility in
    mounting. I do not claim familiarity with all Avocet units, especially the more recent ones, so
    perhaps somebody else can offer comments regarding the potential adaptability of those.

    If you could describe more specifically how you hope to use the computer, that might help keep the
    feedback a bit more focused. Are you intending to actually measure cadence on a bicycle or merely
    measure RPM in some broader sense?

    Hi DR:

    Our application is really simple. A person will pedal a cycle ergometer in our lab and will be
    instructed to maintain a specified pedaling rate. We will be measuring forces and position of the
    pedal but those do not give real time display or feedback. The cadence computer will simply be there
    to give the person feedback so that they can maintain the specified pedaling rate. Right now we have
    an SRM on the ergometer but we want to free that up for other uses so we want a simple cadence
    computer on the force pedal ergometer.

  12. Echowell F-2. It displays cadence, speed (Km/MPH) and distance or average speed or elapsed time at
    the same time. Big enough for an old guy like me to see. One button operation for the
    techno-challenged like me. Reasonably waterproof to boot.
