The post race comments should be interesting. It looked as
if Cunego didn't even try to let Simoni near his wheel at
the end and he kept the pace high enough to prevent Simoni
from doing another attack. Simoni should ease off and save
it for the TdF. ;-)

From what I read in La Gazzetta, he didn't promise any
such thing.

This line of thought, echoed by the OLN broadcast team,
strikes me as bizarre. Saeco should be concerned about
winning the Giro, regardless of which rider does it. With
the maglia rosa on Cunego's back and some time in hand, it
frees Simoni to attack, forcing the other GC contenders to
chase, which allows the MR to sit in. The result being that
either Simoni goes up the road and takes the jersey, leaving
them with a 1/2 GC result as Cunego marks the pursuers, or
he fails, as he did, setting up Cunego to take more time -
as he did. The best scenario for Saeco is 1/2 on GC, and
Simoni's attack and the chase that resulted did at least put
a second Saeco on the podium (for now) by shelling Popovich.
Tomorrow should be interesting - last chance for the
attackers!

In La Gazzetta it was stated quite they had a pact of non-
agression. They were not supposed to ride against each
other. And such pact was put mostly on the mouth of Simoni.

You forgot a third scenario:

Simoni attacks, everyone chases, dropping Cunego. They catch
Simoni and Saeco loses the Giro.

Luckily Cunego didn't get dropped... but you never know.
When you are in a position to defend do so, don't attack.

I gotta agree with Boyd. "Maybe" the Team knew Cunego felt
good and sent Simoni up the road to put the others in
difficulty, handing Simoni the Stage and further up in GC
along with Cunego still in pink. However, I would think that
Simoni pacing Cunego would have been a better Team
tactic...not sure the Team dynamics...would love to know
what was said in the pre race meeting. It is interesing in
one of the interviews that Cunego aludes to the "plan" of
Simoni attacking. Still seems like an interesting tactic to
me if it was planned.

True, it would've been the more usual strategy, and if they
didn't have confidence in Cunego that might've been the way
played it. But with radios, the DS knows in real time how
everyone's feeling, and no one so far had shown the ability
to stay with Cunego on the climbs when he wanted to go. So
they plan their contingencies and when the time comes, DC
tells Corti he's good to go and they give Simoni the green
light. Either way they win, unless Cunego cracked, and if he
was going to, he'd have likely shown signs of weakness on
the Gavia anyway. There was some risk, but for the possible
payoff of a 1/2 on GC, it seems they thought it a reasonable
one. Obviously they had to have faith in Cunego to call that
move, and it was well-placed.

From the looks of it, the greater danger was that Simoni
would blow and lose 4th, but that's a non-podium finish and
not worth being conservative over for the reigning champion.
He clearly is not at the level of last year, and his form
was suspect coming into the Giro. But Saeco obviously want a
1/2, and we'll see if he can get it for them Saturday.

Up to $0.04 now, which sounds about right, value-wise... ;-)

I don't know what will happen tomorrow, but it is going to
be spectacular. I'm not convinced that Cunego has left
Simoni out to dry just yet, but after tomorrow, that's it.

There is so much changing of the guard going on... Nozal for
IGG (Heras is an entirely different animal), Boonen for
Museeuw, Petacchi for Cipollini, Rogers for Virenque (soon),
and now Cunego for Simoni. The way things are going, José
Azevedo will probably win the Tour de France...

Cunego has had a few good moments this year (leading
up to the Giro, of course), but I never would have
thought of him a s a contender,let alone the very
likely winner of the Giro. At least not this year.
