It is just the culture that evolved. No single person is responsible for it, but there are a few
individuals that have a strong influence in that area.

What I really don't understand is why there is no other racing NG. I know many many people that
lurked here and then moved on. I am fairly certain that an alternative NG would do well if it
could just get started and gather enough inertia.

I don't see a reason. I just think the selective indignation is a little strange. After all,
this is an unmoderated newsgroup. Someone could start a commercial bulletin board, but why
be exclusive? From what I've seen, the best racers are respectful of fans and history. It is
nice to be able to see their names here, and cool that kids can come on and communicate with
    people who know their stuff.

Why is it that in this ng, questions and comments, pertinent or not, rude or not regarding
drugs, fat masters, nationalities, attitudes, jersies, diet, training seem to be
well-tolerated, but questions about equipment seem to bring out the internet police? I know
there is a rec.bicycles.marketplace, but I get the distinct impression that the advice to go
there is not friendly advice--it's an admonishment. I am active in a bunch of usenet groups,
all unmoderated. There's plenty of nonsense on all of them. I'm not suggesting that referring
to rec.bicycles marketplace isn't appropriate. It's the tone that I don't understand. Why is
even a bit of spam more upsetting than, say, chauvinististic goading?

  2. Aren't off-topic matters about off-topics supposed to be referred to rec.bicycles.gripes?

Read the faq. It explains how the different rec.bicycle. newsgroups should be used.

Kinda. This newsgroup is not the place for FS or WTB ads.

  3. It's ths sort of attitude that chased Frankie Andreu out of the newsgroup a few years back, when he
posted about how much he loved his Gore-tex wind/rain jacket.

It's all fine and good to sit on our collective fat master's ass and [censored] and whine and moan about
the lack of content in this newsgroup, but God forbid that a pro post anything of substance, or
that someone looking to buy an item useful to racers (such as a tool to duplicate position on a
number of different bicycles) ask in the newsgroup that the target audience for the request is most
    likely to be.

Thankfully, I had several offers (off-group, as requested) in my quest to acquire a Fit-Stik; and am
now awaiting arrival of same to close another successful online transaction.

bandwidth discussing my "off-topic" request than my original post could ever utilize.

Well, sale items I can see flaming. But most of the time if you just ignore it, it will go away.

You'll note that a large proportion of the .marketplace group is now on-line sales people. If I see
more than two entries with the same name on them I won't open a one of them. If you allow these guys
to start on this group there will be nothing but 100 postings a day of yesterday's sale items.

But arguing about the size of j-lo's breasts and if they're implants or the real thing is what you'd
do out on a ride anyhow so why not?

It seems like it's more of a tech question and should be posted to rec.bicycles.tech.

Those people in that group *like* that sort of question.

This is just my opinion, but this group seems like it trends more towards racing tactics and the
racing sub-culture. If there is one thing that a bike racer with a lot of years under his belt tends
to get tired of, it's equipment chattering. My first five years racing, I was into every new doodad
that came along. The last five years racing was spent ignoring that stuff, paying attention to
    training and the mind/body.

That's all off topic, but as you know, trying to interrupt a Chang-Kunich-Pomeranian kissy-fest is
futile. Taunting the French is on-topic when it comes to TdF team selection and OT if it involves US
foreign policy (Please no one try to argue that they are related).

Well, you are a veteran and know the rules, which may mean you get cut less slack, not more. You
could have tried posting first in marketplace and tech, if you got no responses, posting here. That
would have cut the flames down, I bet (though I didn't post an original flame, so who knows).

Okay, enough of this OT stuff. Glad to hear you did find a source, in the end.

Ben I'm not fat, I think, but my power-to-weight ratio sucks anyway

  15. According to Peppy and company, it would be just as off-topic there.

However, I cross-posted to .tech and .marketplace as well ... Most USENET newsreaders are now savvy
enough to mark the message as being read in ALL newsgroups when cross-posting ...

So what I did was expand the audience size for my question with a minimal amount of extra
    bandwidth ...
