And now let's see what happens when I merrily
top post a reply, having no signatures in my email
or my cycling forum account--just took every default,
changed nothing. And good Lord! There are an awful lot of options
about signatures, fonts, and other things here in
cycling forums.Carl Fogel

Rick "$#@%@#%%#" Onanian <---- Explicit signature (censored) [/B]Dear Rick,
So far, I have no signatures anywhere.
Benjamin Weiner explained in an email
that the bug appears to be connected
with having no signature in cycling
forums and appears to be erratic.Imagine--an unreliable computer bug!
It might also (pure theorizing) be affected
by length of message, who is following up
whom (cyclingforums versus rec.bicycles.tech),
and so on.Meanwhile, cycling forums seems to have
added about a hundred new members in
less than 24 hours.Time to pull the trigger and see if I've
developed a signature.Carl Fogel

Carl FogelWe can stop wasting time testing for the signature
bug. It's clearly visible in rec.bicycles.tech. Cycling
forums meb posted the following--note that it has
dave ornee's signature mistakenly attached to it.
I rather doubt that meb is a conspirator trying to
fool Rick Onanian (who apparently didn't notice
the hideous dishonesty) into switching to shaft
drive.Carl Fogel

Hmm...maybe somebody should make a flexible-shaft drive that
doesn't have any sharp angles. I imagine that a reasonably
lightweight and strong flexible shaft can be made out of modern
materials of some sort. It's been done, sort of. I don't have a URL handy, but search for "two
wheel drive bike" or something. They still have two ninety degree turns though. At each end of
the shaft.
After posting, I realized that what I really meant was a
rotating-cable drive. It would still need gentle curve routing rather
than 90 degree corners.Quoted message said:

Rick OnanianHere's another flexible rotating cable drive for the propellor drive
portion of an amphibious bike conversion kit.http://www.shuttlebikeusa.com/story.html
Does anybody have any quantitative data on efficiency losses with
flexible cable drive?--

That wasn't top-posted, and there did not appear to be a sig beyond the autosig from CF itself.
Presumably, you already know this. This message brought to you by the Redundant Bureau of Repeated

http://www.cyclingforums.comThe same message from meb, who is a genuine poster, does not have David Ornee's signature when viewed in cyclingforums.
Conclusion: there is something funny going on with signatures in cyclingforums. It seems perfectly possible for 3 people to post with the same signature without duplicity and without any knowledge that it has happened.
Although I am convinced there has been sock puppetry going on, jmitting and tuschinski may well be genuine posters and not involved. Interestingly there is a J. Mitting in the phone book for Perth, Wetern Australia. If someone decides to give him a call, check the time difference first!

Yes, it does seem to defeat deliberate top-posting, presumably a feature instead of a bug. In any
case, the bug being hunted can be seen elsewhere in rec.bicycles.tech, where meb posted from cycling
forums in a thread about shaft-drive bicycles and a bug-signature showed up with the usual "dave
ornee" information. I've posted the details elsewhere in this thread.Carl Fogel

So far, the only demonstrated sock puppetry is being provided by you. What evidence convinces you
that anyone was dishonest in their posting in the helmet thread? Please name them.Carl Fogel

Dear Benjamin,
Christ, I thought that I'd done it again, but then I thought no, even I couldn't be that stupid, not
right after getting the names straight and apologizing. Only a complete imbecile would screw your
names up again, right? You two aren't, by any chance, a pair of gorgeous women, are you? Usually that's when I start using
the wrong names and getting those pitying looks.I'm just going to stick with first names and hope that you can both forgive me.
Sorry again,
(brief pause to check my driver's license)

Hah! Even you're tired of spending time on it when you could be arguing some thread that's gone
further off-topic. 😉Dear Rick,
Not really. You can find more examples of the signature bug by searching in rec.bicycles.tech for
"ornee" and "meb" (3 examples) and "ornee" and "corsaire" (1 example) and "ornee" and "diablo*" (2
examples, one reversed).Of course, Dave Ornee might actually be one of these other posters, like Fabrizio and Ryan, but it
seems unlikely that he's all three. And it seems obvious that the same bug afflicted the people
accused of dishonesty by rec.bicycles.tech posters.Incidentally, despite claims that cycling forum posters are so rare in rec.bicycles.tech, a search
for cyclingforums.com shows over 1,600 posts. And I just checked--they had 28,181 members at this time yesterday and now have 28,311, about 130
new members in a single weekday. No reply yet from the moderator about why the helmet thread vanished, but then he may well be up to
his ears in moderating the swarming hordes.Carl Fogel
