As a general rule one can walk all canal towpaths, on one side of all
canals. in the UK. They do however sometimes get closed and have other
irritating problems.

The most irritating problem is tunnels, where you are supposed to lay on
your back on your narrow boat and walk on the roof. Really challenging
without the boat. 8<,

Luckily there are often paths over the top, used by the horses. Plus the
canal builders avoided digging tunnels whenever there was a halfway sane
alternative.

All of it. Get yourself a map (OS or specialist canal map) and go.
You'll be going faster than the boats, on average.

Try looking at http://www.waterscape.com/index.html - British Waterways
leisure website. Lots of info, including the state of the towpath for each
canal. Click on Waterways Guide (top menu) , the area you want, then the
particular canal you want, then walking guide (side menu) and you'll get a
comment such as this (for the Shropshire Union).

"The canal runs through delightful countryside, with all but a small stretch
of the towpath usable by walkers. It is possible to walk from Wolverhampton
all the way to the Mersey Estuary, passing through the historic city of
Chester. A half-mile section near bridge 88 is currently impassable,
although you can use a diversion through Nantwich."

If you're cycling the cycling guide tells you which stretches you can use.

An excellent website - there's even a journey planner for plotting a route
from a to b .

Don't rely on OS maps being accurate - when I walked from Land's End to John
O'Groats I followed the very lovely Worcs & Staffs canal round the west of
Birmingham, rather than field-hopping on the parallel Staffordshire Way. I
was worried about sections of towpaths missing on the map - but as the
website promised the path was in good condition throughout.
