Shrader to Presta

Why would you need to redrill for a presta valve? They are much smaller than schraders and the only thing you should be worrying about is tearing the base of the valve on that sharp edge of the rim.

I was thinking that the end of the presta valve may have a shank diameter molded into the tube that prevents it from pulling away from the tube when tightening the nut.
Also another line of reasoning was why didnt the LBS just offer up the advice of using the presta in the first place.

I was looking at some tubes too and I dont think that I have seen anything wider then a 26' tube with a shrader valve. It wouldnt be a surprise if there were any though. [IMG]/img/vbsmilies/smilies/biggrin.gif[/IMG]
I really dont think that drilling a new hole in the rim is a good idea. It might cause the rim to crack later on. Plus I dont think that you need to drill a new hole to fit a presta valve. Once you get the valve in place you can try securing it in place with the nut. If the nut doesnt support the valve over the hole of the rim then you might need a bigger nut with the same thread diameter.

Another problem I did not mention is water getting into the wheel because of the difference in hole size. I can plug the original hole with JB weld.

I think water gets on the wheel anyway. I dont think that this is a problem though.

Dave, you should be able to buy a grommet that fits into the Schrader valve hole that converts it to Presta valve size.

My 1964 Paramount still has the original 27 x 1 1/4" wheels which originally used Schrader valved tubes, but my Dad put those grommets in and switched over to Presta valve tubes several years ago.

I've also heard those Schrader to Presta grommets called "adapter sleeves", FWIW.

This is great news I will start searching.

Such schrader-to-presta grommets exist. They slip in under the rim tape. I bought a pair a year or so back at a nearby LBS.

Readily available. I was able to find them right quick doing a google search.

Seeing as I have double wall rims I am planning on using two per wheel.

I recently purchased a 29er. The bike has shrader valve stems. After searching around I and finding out that 700 X 50 tubes with schrader valves are not that common. My LBS has about 50 of these in stock and they gave me two when I mentioned this situation to them. I am thinking that when they run out they may not restock.

FYI. If you have a TREK store (i.e., any store that carries "Bontrager" stuff) near you, then you will probably always be able to buy 700x50 tubes with either Schrader or Presta valves.
