  1. Starting the new year at my new offices in CBD on Monday.
Im gonna be near Kozminsky's (down goirls!)
and Bunnings (down boys! and, er goirls ๐Ÿ™„ ).
The new digs dont have showers, etc

Does anyone know the easiest/cheapest option I have to get access to showers and lockers so I can keep commuting?
Im thinking the nearby gyms, but that could get pricey at CBD rates

    suggestions?

Can't help you with lockers, but my building has good change rooms and
just installed a heap of new bike racks. Access is via the car park so
no issues with getting into the building. Drop me a PM or email if you
want more info. It's about 2 blocks from where you are.

Who needs lockers?? Where I used to work (up until only a couple of months ago), I had to bring EVERYTHING to work... every day. Here's a list:

    Hair Dryer
    Make up
    Clothes (including suit jacket)
    Shoes
    Lunch
    Spares
    Towel
    Coat Hangers (X 2)
Hairspray (those little can just don't keep my mop in place. I really need the hard core superglue stuff)

    Now who's tough?!?!

Tip: if you need to bring clothes that crinkle, roll rather than fold them. This makes all the difference.

Well.. I dunno.. "makeup" and "tough" don't
usually go together ;-) Bloody good effort with
the haulage though! My goal is always to take
as little as possible. You'd have to be using
    panniers right?

    Oh, where's the SHOWER!!??

You'd be near the Fitness First on Bourke/Elizabeth then? You could always join your local FF which should give you at least access to the changing facilities in the CBD one.

According to tinyurl.com6tgdp the nearest are at Spencer St or the City Baths - neither of which are particularly convenient.

Obviously the general concensus would be to lobby, lobby, lobby your landlords/employers until they provided decent facilities citing the healther employees = higher productivity formula.

    Good luck,
    Craigster.

That's what I used to do until I got access to showers at work. It
worked out quite well as my wife was a member at the time so it cost
about 20 bucks less per month than usual. From memory full rate's about
    75 bucks a month.

I went in yesterday arvo and asked around...
Banana Alley gym, one up behind 'The National' and I stood at the corner of Eliz and Burk trying to locate the fitnessfirst but couldnt find it!
    Where is it???

And as for lobbying the employer, youre talkin to him! ๐Ÿ™„

No, I fit it all in my back pack. And it was 62km a day. It's no wonder my shoulders were always sore. The problem was that there were no lockers in the building (they could afford to put marble and granite throughout it, yet lockers would no doubt break the budget)... I guess I could have left my make up and hair dryer at my desk and do all that kind of stuff in the bathroom on my floor, but for some reason, rather than get a nice pink glow about me after exercise, I turn a pale shade of blue. I was not prepared to inflict such a sight on my co-workers, nor the people I would pass on my trip to my floor.

Oh, and I think panniers are a bit daggy. Lame I know, but I'm a [censored] when it comes to things like that.

    Quoted message said:

Couldn't fit that. But I did contemplate getting one of those camping showers to avoid the wait to use one of the showers in the building. Hell, I'd have showered at my desk!

You don't want your coworkers to see a 'blue you' but

We have a shower at work, but given its output is exclusively
COLD water.. I'm the only one to have used it.. I'll stick to
    the gym showers..

  12. pity you're not up the 'proper' end of town (ie. russell-spring) or I could guide you to the showers in 55 Collins St which are free (if you can find them and pretend to look like a sweaty bureaucrat.)

..In the base of the ANZ tower at 55 Collins St there are showers which, at least when i worked there 3 or so years ago, were accessible to who looked like they worked there. No passcards or keys required - the only real restriction was that they were a bit tricky to find - I guess that was enough of a barrier. the only other catch is they could be busy at times and were a tad more voyeuristic than i liked... I'd be happy to check it out and see if it's still public if you were interested, and show you the secret path and handshake required. Bit of a hike after the shower for you though, and no lockers.

Thankfully I moved down the road to a workplace with a lovely private shower. aahhh...

Why would anyone get gym membership? Save up 10 months worth, and get
a bike, and ride for the rest of eternity.

    Don't run though; running's stupid ;P

I pay ~$34/month so that I can shower post-ride every day.
Can you imagine sitting in an office all day after slogging

I don't like to gloat, but I am lucky enough that I have got a massive
locker at work (about 1.2m wide with double doors) as well as ready access
to showers. We also have a full gymnasium (no membership fees) that
includes free weights, plate machines, and cardio machines. There is also
an indoor basketball court and two tennis courts available. We are also
located directly across St Kilda Road from the Tan (running track in
Melbourne around the botanic gardens that is about 4km long).

Did I mention that there are plenty of bike hooks and I generally don't even
bother with locking up my bikes at work as the only way to get in and out is
through gates that have security guards on them?? There is even a medical
centre and pharmacy in location which has come in handy a couple of times in
the wet after having a stack of some description and losing some bark off my
    arms and legs!!

Basically I have no excuses for not riding and so I ride pretty well every
    day come rain or shine.

The only thing that I can complain about is that there is no swimming pool
available (first time in 16 years with this employer that I haven't been
able to swim at lunch times).

    Ride On,

    Hmm.. okay, not bad.. :-P

I basically have the bathroom as my locker which has a shower
but I pay the $32/mth for access to Hawthorn Aquatic which
has 'hot' water. No gym for me but we run 5.7k laps around
Hawthorn (yes, I move over when people ding their bells on
    the SE freeway underpass!)

Indoor basketball and two tennis courts?! Where the hell do
you work?! We have an awesome view of the city and beer
in the fridge. Top notch coffee machine too. woo hehe..

I've never locked my bike up at work. We are up three flights
of stairs and the only people coming up are couriers and very
rarely a client. My bike sits at the main door, reminding
everyone that "riding is better". :-)

Medical centre? The one time I fell down the stairs, and 'did'
my ankle, I rode home and then went out clubbing.. lets just
say that I was going to physio for a good few weeks after
that! Um.. oops.. I think we have a first aid kit but I've
    never seen it used..

My HALC membership gives me access to the 100m pool.
You have a pretty damn good setup.. I can't wait to see what
it's like in 'don.. save me!

    Hey Gags,

You forgot to mention those all expenses paid camping trips to exotic
locations all around Australia. Oh and the fact that you've also got
another fully equiped gym, indoor multipurpose stadium, squash courts,
tennis courts, swimming pool, medical centre etc within walking distance of
home. Only thing missing, that I can easily live without, is the Golf
    Course.

I'm also going to upset hippy (and maybe others) by mentioning a place in
the same location where you can drink VERY cheap beer and spirits.
