  1. So there's this guy at one of my LBSs. He's got quite a bit of extra baggage and he just sorta hangs
around the shop. Almost every time I've gone there he's just there standing around chatting with the
    employees. I can't really tell if it's a parasite/host relationship or if it's symbiotic.

He knows quite a bit about bikes, but he tries to take me under his wing as his protegé or
something, but I don't want to get too close to his lard. Besides, the only thing he's tried to
teach me is that "blah blah blah you need to get top of the line blah blah blah," and we all know
    that's not true.

I'd like to see this guy ride. Not that I'm expecting him to be dead slow, but I wonder if he does
the "fat person bike stance." That stance is riding with your knees turned at 90 degrees to each
other, spread-eagle while riding because your legs are so fat they can't rotate normally. I'll have
to have someone take a picture of what I'm talking about sometime.

Does anyone here know of a similar situation at their LBS or anywhere else?

Well if he's fat, do you blame him? Maybe he's fat AND he can ride?

Ask him for some good trail suggestions. Offer to meet him there so he can show you.

Sounds like me in Wheelies in Swansea. Please bear in mind that some of us like pies and bikes in
equal measure.OTOH, the LBS bicycle bulshitter is a well documented phenomenon.

Yup. Sounds pretty much like me now. Every time I go in for something as simple as an inner tube
they usually try and sell me something I don't want, such as a Fox badge holder for my door swipe in
work, a plastic disc brake cover or an air cooled VW.

Mind you, if they're not busy just shooting the breeze with them and watching the lovely ladies
walking past the shop front is good too.

LOL! My blissfully ignorant mate went into Cycle World Sunderland for a brake cable and came out
with a full LX drivetrain. Hilariously, there was nothing wrong with his old one - he hadn't even
    worn one chain out.

Just be wary of Hardisty's (Sorry, now Edinburgh Bicycle). The same clueless mate bought a Klein
there and they helpfully left the brakes in US configuration, ensuring everyone who 'had a shot' of
his new bike ended up over the bars:-)

I know this may sound odd, especially here on a cycling newsgroup, but some people just really
    like bikes.

If he wants to take you on as a protoge, go along with it and go for a ride. He could be fast, or
quite slow, just don't think that it means anything.

One other thing, be careful about judging a book by its cover. I've seen some pretty heavy looking
dudes drop major hammer and leave the skinny guys wafting about like leaves in their wake.

You guys are all Brits. I lived in Edinburgh for a year and cycled in the Pentlands over
Heriot-Watt where I did my postgrad. Hard to find mud anywhere in Edinburgh, I found. The dogshit

I call them "shop vultures". If they knew so much about bikes, then why the hell aren't they out
riding? They seem to get most of their "knowledge" from the ragazines and really don't know what the
hell they are talking about, using buzzwords and brand names to fake their "kowledge". They are sad
    creatures, indeed.
