The main thing you need to look for is a shoe that's
comfy (obviously) but one that also has a very stiff sole.

Soft soles will conentrate the pressure from the cleat to
a smaller area which is more likely to cause pain and discomfort.

The trade-off is that stiffer soles make walking harder than
softer soles do, so it depends a bit on what sort of
riding you do.

Most moutain bike shoes are also suitable for walking, but not all. If you
want to park your bike somewhere and walk around you will want this style of
shoe.

I used SPDs for a while but never got comfortable with
them so have used flats since. Maybe I could give them

Clipless on the road, rules, no doubt!

Sometimes for short distances I just ride with sneakers on
the SPD pedals, but that is well dodgy!

My "shop" bike (basically been replaced with my SS mtb)
has bmx "bear trap" pedals, minus the sharp cages...

Not sure if it's been mentioned in the thread already, but Shimano
do have 1/2 - 1/2 pedals, which have clips one side, and are flat
(for use with normal shoes) on the other.
I've never used them, but the idea is a good one...

I have a pair. They came with the GT I bought used.
They are ok but really the cage-side isn't sharp enough
for real grip and the SPD side has a tendency to shed
vital parts - the screws holding the clip shake loose
over time.

Riding clipless on-road and flats off-road means that I
just use pedals that suit whichever terrain I'm riding,
rather than compromise with these. If I only had one
bike, however, that was used for long rides AND riding
to the shops, these half-half pedals would be awesome!

Never had a problem with my half and half falling apart but did find they
had a grip problem as you stated. (although not currently attached to a bike
but I did use them a lot for a while). Found I was never riding with the
cage often enough to warrent it so replaced them.

Just one other thing. I would be a bit wary of buying second hand shoes.
Ill fitting shoes will give you a lot of grief later. (take it from someone
who has done this).
