- hi.
- basically , there are 2 ways to move bike. One is to push/mash a big gear , or, two , 'spin' a light gear.
- spin is better , more efficient and saves your knees.
- spinning (esp at high cadences , eg , above 90 rpm) is only really possible with pedal/cleat systems. Ie , the feet at attached to the pedals and the muscles are 'forced' to learn the 360.
- if you can get a Cycle computer with cadence function , it'll teach you discipline when you're starting out which will pay off when you improve later on.
cheers.

There is a wide range of biking shoes to choose from. Mountain Biking shoes or Commuter Biking shoes are a good choice for making the switch to biking shoes. The cleats are recessed in the bottom of the shoe. They are comfortable to walk in. The cleats on Road Biking shoes protrude for the sole of the shoe and are difficukt to walk in. If you go with biking shoes with cleats they can be difficult to set up at first. You will probably want to purchase the biking shoes, pedals and cleats form you local bike shop. This way they can help you set up and adjust the cleats and pedals properly.
Get used to the feeeling of clipping in and out before your first ride. On your first several rides plan ahead on your stops. Decide which shoe you are going to unclips before you stop. It only takes a second to loose your balance.
