Trick for buying surprise clothing or shoe presents - look at the size of another pair or item of the same type when they are not being worn by the intended recipient of the new shoes etc. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Some things you can even measure with a tape measure (but probly not shoes). I have been known to wander about the Myers ladies clothing section with an 8 metre builders tape measure measuring blouses in order to buy a Christmas present. ๐Ÿ™„

    "Can I help you sir?"

"Yep, just hold this hooked end thingy of my tape measure on the collar of this jacket so I can measure it and see if it's the right size"

argh! no! don't do this! errr... check other shoes, that is. Two pairs of runners, one size 38cm, one size 41 cm... my bike shoes, 40cm.

For clothes buying: You don't need a tape measure, you just wander around until you find someone close to the same size and shape. Then ask them ๐Ÿ˜„

One nice fellow even tried on some jeans for me once ๐Ÿ˜‰

ali... honest, I'm not the dirty old lady hanging out in menswear!

I left out an important bit - make sure you can take 'em back if they don't fit. ๐Ÿ˜„

In the right shop, the shop assistants can also be useful to ask about size. "Is she about my size? Or about her size? Or the size of the lady over there?"

But that doesn't work for shoes ๐Ÿ™„

I get asked for size too - "My son is about your size, what size jeans do you take?"

More worrying when I have been shopping with my teenage daughter and I have been asked by woman who was about my age about buying CDs for teenage girls. The evil Steve wanted to suggest something totally inappropriate but the good Steve did the right thing and declined to make any suggestion.

UNO is on Nepean Hwy in Carrum. Just across from Carrum station. Number 642
I think. It closes about 6PM these cold nights. Was closed when I walked
    past it tonight.

They have some good specials - I couldn't see shoe prices though.

On hols in Melbourne at Christmas I saw a very pretty dress that I
wanted to buy, but as I had no idea of the correlation between Aus and
UK dress sizes I asked the shop assistant what measurements someone
would be if they wore a size 12. She had no idea. Neither did the
other girl working there. I had to dash outside to find a woman more
or less my size and ask her what size she was and by great good fortune
she had been to M&S (in Hong Kong) and was able to translate sizes for
    me*.

It was all worth it, the frock looks lovely.

*Australian sizes are one down from the UK, a 12 in London is a 10 in
    Melbourne. Bonus!

Well I think I will just take her to stores.. Best suggestion so far in
Uno who I have dealt with in the past.. found really good.

She loves her bike. I suspect that this one is a keeper ๐Ÿ™‚

    Dave,
if you want to buy a surprise pressie, buy some cool cycling socks to go with the shoes.๐Ÿ™‚

    SteveA

  18. i dont want to put a downer on your good intentions, but you cant really buy cycling shoes as a gift for someone

good advice for anyone looking for some cycling shoes is to try on as many diff types as possible. fit is utterly important when it comes to the shoe, so u cant compromise with an ill fitting pair

i take a 42-43 size in a regular shoe but my sidi's are a 45. you might buy something in the right 'size' but it wont necessarily be a good fit

some brands just wont suit some feet

Ummmm, she has big feet..( for a girl)
Apparently in one of those female things I just dont understand this
actually makes asking her feet size rude.

Also apparently I am just supposed to know such things.

    Its all too hard ๐Ÿ™

Firstly - hi folks, I'm on here now... And yes, I'm happy with my bike!

Secondly, no - I don't have big feet! It's just that shoes, like every
other item of clothing, have different sizing in different brands... So
picking a pair of shoes to get a size is dangerous, as someone else
pointed out. And I never told him he couldn't ask what size my feet are
    - someone else must have done that to him!
