  1. My wife has twisted my arm into doing the BHF ride to the
bike show, 48miles, in a few weeks' time. Although I've
never ridden that far in one hit, I'm not overly concerned
about the distance per se. I can ride 25 mile on towpaths of
varying quality in two hours with no obvious effect on me,
my heart rate remaining at 140ish for the whole period.

However, what I am noticing toward the end of two hours is
that my toes are getting a feeling akin to thawing out after
being cold. Could this be caused by my shoes not being stiff
enough? I'm using cheap Shimano trainers, SPD cleats and the
WTB 250 pedals supplied with the bike. Should I consider
    stiffer shoes?

Hmmm... The only time I've had that, I was wearing shoes
that were too small. Any chance that could the case for you?

    Cheers, helen s

It could be. I was surprised that both for the Shimanos and
a pair of Scarpa walking shoes I bought that I appeared to
fit into a size 46, when I would have expected to use
something slightly larger (I usually start with a UK 12 or a
US 13). However, the Scarpa shoes have been very successful,
admittedly again snug, and a new pair of shoes I bought in
the US a few weeks ago were a US 12. I was theorising that
I'd been buying shoes slightly big for a while.

So, do I buy a stiffer pair, or a bigger pair, or a stiffer
    bigger pair?

  4. Could be your saddle is too high - cutting off the nerves in
your groin that end in the feet...

Bigger, in my experience. I get pins and needles/loss of
sensation in my feet when riding (or running, or wearing
extraordinarily high heels [not while riding or running])
and the amount of room in the shoe appears to have the
largest bearing on how quickly it comes on and how long it
lasts. Wearing my seal skinz inside my normal cycling
trainers makes it much much worse than wearing thin summer
    socks, for example.
