Shoe sizing--variability across manufacturers?

Using these as a reference, can anybody guess what my size would be for
shoes from Carnac, Exustar, and/or Sette? (Lake is also on the list, but
much lower priority.)

Theoretically, the EU sizing should be dead standard,
because the EU's job is holding manufacturers to rather
strict metrical standards. There's probably an office
you can write to over there that will take your data
seriously.

And now I'm worried, because I just ordered some shoes
online, which I've never done before, but all the shoes at
the LBSes suxxored and cost twice what they looked like
they were worth, and the online ones were pretty cheap
so unless they're both left feet they'll be better than
my sneakers.

This is unwise. Shoe fit is among the most important thing for
cycling. It's got to be right. If you have a pair of shoes in a
certain brand/model and size that work, then yeah, ebay or
mailordering the same thing is probably fine. But otherwise, it's a
false economy.

Sizing is sometimes not consistent with ONE manufacturer, let alone many. Why
clothes and shoes are rsky via MO or ebay.

Here are my size data points:
AXO (current shoes): 41
Diadora: 41
Pearl Izumi: 39
Shimano: 40 or 41 (honestly, they both felt the same)
Sidi: 41
Specialized: 40

I ride Sidi's and they run smaller and narrower than other shoes I've tried.
But as one poster stated, most high-end shoes have a lot of handwork in
them. I've tried on several Sidi Genius 4s (48) that were all slightly
different in size. This really sucks for us bigfoots because most shops (at
least around No. Utah) don't stock anything bigger than a 46. I have to
order mine online, but only from a retailer with a liberal exchange policy
so I can send them back until I get a pair that has the right fit. I'm
saving my pennies and next year hope to get a pair of custom Rocket 7s. But
for what they cost, I'll need to save more than pennies!

Standard sizing is not "standard". If you must order online or MO your best bet
is to check the return policy before you order. BTW, it could be much worse.
Try buying western style boots sometime.
