fan. Now I run in NB 807's, a trail shoe. To make my choice I tried
several brands and styles, and ran around the track in each until I
found a pair that felt like I was running barefoot.

In the case of the 807, it's more like "completely [censored]".
808's (this years model) *are* kind of clunkers for roads, but for
bread-and-butter runs on technical rocky trails, they aren't bad at all,
particularly if you need a wide shoe. They're a bit heavy, but they have a
good fit and make a fine 2nd pair of trail shoes for me. They're also far
less brick-like than previous models in this line (803, 804)...
I'd really like to try some Asics Gel-Eagle Trails, which get great reviews,
but haven't found a mail-order store that has them in stock in my size...
and some stores I've called to ask about their in-stock sizes before going
in gave me the run-around "we can't fit you over the phone" [censored]. Those
seem to be a popular shoe.
Currently my preferred trail shoe is some North Face ultra 102's, which have
a great ride for the rocks, but the fit after a couple of hours isn't
perfect, so still looking.

you put some miles on them how they'll react.
Put a few hundred miles on a brick, and it's still a brick.
