I am a beginner mtn biker. I am trying d/h & xc, as well as using it around town for some rides on the local paved trail after work.
I wanted to get a shoe which was casual & comfortable. I wound up purchasing the Shimano MO21 and the Specialized Sonoma. The Shimano is a bit cheaper but does have some tread while the Sonoma doesn't. Does anyone have an opinion of which might be better (they both fit comfortably), maybe in terms of quality or experience?
I will also need a pedal and the crank brother egg beaters came highly recommended (I decided to bypass the entry level Shimano b/c I am mtn biking). Some people have told me the Candy ones might be a bit easier for a beginner to use, especially when mtn biking (since the platform is useful to still pedal when you can't or don't want to get your foot in immediately) however others have claimed the platform just gets in the way. Any opinions here?
Also, if the egg beater candy's have platforms, doesn't this defeat the point of 4 sided entry? You have to turn the pedal flat to get your foot in (or is this pretty automatic when you go to put your foot in)?

The candies platform rotates around the spindle so you still have 4 way entry.
I have both and don't rate one over the other, except that the plain version's better in the snow ;-).

I tried the Candys first, and then switched to the Eggbeaters. The plastic portion of the Candy presses against the shoe sole while the clip portion reaches into the shoe recess and clips on. If everything is perfect, this means that you have distributed the pressure more. I think that a more flexible shoe sole, comfortable for walking, would also provide good contact of the with the foot. However, in my case, the shoe soles were a mite too thick, and I had a hard time clipping in, so I went to the Eggbeaters.
Pedalling the Eggbeaters without clipping in is no problem. The recess and the clip seem to work pretty well even before the "snap"--sometimes I have to pull up to find out whether I am in or not.
I am sure the Candy's would be much better for riding in street shoes. One reason I like the Eggbeaters is their elegant simplicity. I guess it's a case of "less is more."

Yes it does. I have the Candys and while they generally work well, I have some complaints. Mucho hacking of the soles of my shoes was needed to get them to work. They are well sealed, but the spinning action is slightly stiff, not like a worn out pedal, but like they are too tightly assembled. I may be able to adjust it out, but I'm afraid of making them too loose.
