Shipping bikes from the US?

Good move coming Down-Under, great weather for cycling here. Have not moved a bike by air, but read about it as hoping to move to UK in 2004. I understand you can take bike on plane as luggage as long as is packed in or bike carrier box?

Best way is probably to bring it with you. Qantas charge half-price for a bike as an extra piece of
luggage (ie 50 % of suitcase charge), and many airlines will give extra baggage allowance or cheap
excess if you are moving home.

I've bought 3 bikes from e-bay in the US.

The first 2 (about 8 months ago)cost me about $160 US each to send here via US Post Global Express.

I bought the most recent one last month and found that US Post had changed the maximum size for
Global Express. I now have to use Global Express Guaranteed which cost $250 US.

I've looked for other options but can't find any except for surface freight (via sea) which takes 90
days minimum.

I sent my bike from singapore to melboure a couple of years back using fedex. I belive they have a
different rate once your "parcel" exceeds a certain weight and becomes "cargo". In my case, it was
cheaper to send the bike with a sound system to make up the weight compared to sending the bike on
it's own. Hope this will be go some help
