I disagree. If its based on price, have you seen the price of DA or Ultegra
10, it would look more like this:

Dura Ace
Ultegra Record (aluminum crank, not carbon)
105 Chorus
Tiagra Centaur
Sora Veloce

However, instead of basing your choice on "price", I would look first at
FIT, that is, which lever do you prefer? If you prefer Shimano STI, at the
least, get DA STI levers, because of 3 year warranty, and then everything
else ultegra.

If you like Campy Ergo levers, look closely at Centaur, arguably the best
"value" in Campy's lineup as the innards of the rear hub and ergo levers are
the same as Record!

Is Centaur using bushings or ball bearing in the brifters now? It was
my understanding that that (bb in the brifters, that is), the cranks,
and a few grams here and there were the big deliniators between
Record/Chorus and the "lesser" groups.

A bronze sleeve in MIR/VEL/CEN, a cartridge bearing in CHR/REC.
Other Ergo internal small parts largely interchange, notably
the wearing springs & spring carrier. The shift insert (some
say 'cam'😉 also interchanges across all models above.
(I haven't ever opened a Xenon but they are completely
different inside)

The more durable and more expensive BB, cold forged cranks
and calipers of Chorus and Record along with the thicker
better machined chainrings of Centaur, Chorus and Record all
give more mileage which is the biggest difference.

Where are you buying your parts at? If you compare "apples to apples",
you can easily find Campy veloce 9 cassette for like $40-45 (and that's
at Nashbar and Lickton), C9 chains are like $20-25, that a total of
what $60-65?

In contrast, Shimano 105 9 cassettes cost about $30-35; since there's
no shimano 105 chain, the cheapest 9 speed chain will run about $15.
That about $45. The difference is maybe $20-25, not $100.....

mail order supplier

Cassettes :

Veloce 9 : 24 UKP
Shimano HG70 : 30 UKP
Shimano HG50 : 25 UKP

Chains :

Campag C9 : 15 UKP
Shimano HG73 super narrow : 18 UKP

Prices all pretty similar

Further, since ANY 9 speed chain will work with both Campy and Shimano, the
big difference comes down to cassette. Since Nashbar sells Veloce 9 cassette
for $40; 105 cassette for $35, its a $5 difference, real big deal!
