I've just rebuilt an old bike with Ultegra parts and a 12-27 cassette. Everything works well after careful adjustment, except that I cannot get a click shift onto the 24 tooth cog. I can pull the chain onto the 24 tooth cog manually or by holding the shift lever, but there is no click detent. Is this normal with this cassette or is the lever malfunctioning. I've followed Sheldon Brown's recommendations about adjusting tensions, and the limit screws, the B screw and all other things seem correct. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Disconnect the shift lever and ensure you have 8 clicks in the lever(9s). If not you either have a 8s lever or the thing is history. You can also try to flush with WD-40.
