Great way to fsck up the bearings/locking compound on the cleat plate screws.

Scrub clean, lightly lube springs and retention plate pivots with oil or preferably compressed air pushed in grease (mind the bearing seals), and CANDLE WAX the cleat plate/retention claw. CANDLE WAX CANDLE WAX CANDLE WAX CANDLE WAX CANDLE WAX CANDLE WAX CANDLE WAX CANDLE WAX CANDLE WAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ONLY place for wax lubricant on a bike (yes, I'm invoking the flame-war deity from long ago rec.bikes.tech - but JUST DO IT MY WAY, OK?). I've seen so many sad, trashed, coming-apart SPDs in the shop (with plenty of bearing life left in them), and I know exactly why. Wally owner teflon/hydrocarbon-base lubed the cleat plate. Grow opposable thumbs, guys, and get with the program. Told at least twice, in many cases.

Oh, and if it doesn't stop, buy new cleats. Put them EXACTLY where the old ones were, or get them set up if your knees were getting sore before.

Okay perhaps 'hose' wasn't appropriate. I spray the spot where the cleat
interfaces the pedal with a short burst of WD.
I have the same 505 pedals (used to be on my roadie, they are on my mtb
now) and I've had no problems with bearings or the 'locking compound'.
In fact, I didn't even know about a locking compound because the scews
have never come undone. (I just cursed myself didn't I?).

Well.. you work in the shop so I can't really argue with you, but, in
_my_ experience WD40 works just fine on SPDs. Lubing chains is painful
enough, I'm not about to conduct controlled testing of pedal lubes.. 😉

Hey, Mr Sweetness and Light, I wasn't even feeling grumpy, i was feeling mildly elated. It just seemed to come across on the screen as tetchy. I wanted to shake this ship of state/fools/negotiable crew membership up a little, and so didn't milden the discourse.

When you see the repeated, predictable results of slap-happy home maintenance, and then the long faces of those who are told how much their DIY will cost to fix, you get a little jaded after a while. I subscribe to 'a bit of spiky dialogue will clear the air' theory. Hip, you sound like a competent sort, no offence intended. Blah, snide abatement is one of the best tools for finding out some tricks of the trade from someone who's got a few stored away, OK?

if you are worried about gunkage, you could try rubbing a pencil on the
contact points of the pedal and/or cleat. it works for me. carpenters
pencils are great for it.

Just proved that the problem was lack of lubrication in the springs and the
stops for the rear moving clip - a drop of lubricant in each area fixed my
squeaks - Enough of the grumpyness already :-)

..(old lubricant appears to have been cleared away by cleaning the things) -

In my profession, I deal with a lot of beginner writers. When you see
the repeated, predictable results of slap-happy home writing, and then
the long faces of those who are told how much their DIY will cost to
redraft, you get a little jaded after a while. I subscribe to 'a bit of
spiky dialogue will clear the air' theory. Generally, you sound like a
competent sort, no offence intended. Just the precision is lacking. I
wasn't even feeling grumpy, I was feeling mildly elated. It just seemed
to come across on the screen as tetchy. I wanted to shake this ship of
state/fools/negotiable crew membership up a little with some practical,
take home language-use advice.
