  1. I wore out the middle ring on my Deore LX crankset, so I looked for a
replacement made with a tougher alloy. I bought a Race Face
replacement, but on closer inspection I see that the teeth on the Race
Face are offset from the Shimano's by one-half tooth. In other words,
the teeth on the RF line up with the valleys on the Shimano.

It seems to me that RF middle ring just won't work in the crankset with
Shimano big and little rings. The shifting would be terrible, yes?
    Anyone agree or disagree?

    Thanks,
    Lew W.

I'll bet it will be fine...as long as it has pins/ramps and other
thingys that help the chain to shift from small to big.

I have used RaceFace rings on shimano cranksets for years, never had
any problems. RaceFace has always been a high quality product IMO.

Just how precise do you suppose this stuff is?

Since the teeth are spaced at a fixed distance from one another and not on a
radius, it is more or less impossible for them to line up from one ring to
    another.

It's a freaking mountain bike built for riding over logs and stuff. Whatever
makes you think it cares. A Swiss watch this ain't.

Well, Ron, since you bring it up -

I don't know how the RF middle ring teeth line up with the little and
big ring teeth. All I know is that they don't line up with the teeth on
the Shimano ring that the RF will replace.

It's a freaking touring bike and it won't be ridden over logs and
    stuff.

What makes me think it cares is this wild idea I have in my head that
when the chain moves from one ring to another it needs the teeth to
sorta line up between the rollers in the chain.

You are correct, however, that it ain't a Swiss watch.

In view of the responses, I guess I'll hang on to the RF and try it
when the Shimano ring wears out, which ought to be pretty soon.

Sorry, needlessly harsh, I suppose. Spend too much time being a dumbass in rbr.

The test is how they line up with the others they will be used with. It is
almost, but not quite impossible to select cogs that result in the teeth lining
up in any way with the other rings.

Ah, my mistaken assumption. LX is from Shimano's mountain bike line.

They sorta will. But only sorta. And in this case, sorta is about all we can do.

    Whew, got one.

Honest, if it's a proper ring with modern pins and goofy teeth it'll do fine.

    Dear Ron,

I haven't even got that excuse.

    Thanks for reminding me.

However, a Swiss BB/chainring/front shifting system is available that
would work on an ATB: <http://www.schlumpf.ch/md_engl.htm>.

What an irritating website design. Whoever did the site is so familiar with the
product that he assumed nothing much needed to be explained before digging into
    the details.
