Sora levers are very high quality -- arguably they shift as well or better than anything else, and are very durable too. The problem with them is they can't be shifted from the drops, unless you have thumbs like Uma Thurman's in that Tom Robbins movie.

Sora levers are very high quality -- arguably they shift as well or better than anything else, and are very durable too. The problem with them is they can't be shifted from the drops, unless you have thumbs like Uma Thurman's in that Tom Robbins movie.

I had no idea either. However, if you need new shifters anyway, you might as well buy a new cassette and chain too, and "upgrade" to 9 speed.
OTOH, 8sp chains and cassettes are, and probably will be, cheaper for a few more years.
Well, if you use a Camp Ergo 10 shifter with your Shimano 8 cassette and Shiman rear derailleur, you'll shift Shimano 8 cassette perfectly.
Have you done this? I have 10-spd Ergo levers on the way, and I'm planning to use them with my 8-spd Shimano setup. I'm hoping for a field report... maybe I'll post my own in weeks or months to come.

It works fine. I've done it several times for tandems and just this week for a road bike. The STI shifters were toast and the guy that owned the bike was low on $. A set of Veloce Ergo for $150 and he's got all new cables/housing and shifters. When he gets a Campy rear derailleur, he can shift Shiman 9/10 and Campy 10.

Isn't the key word here "legacy", meaning no longer in production? Weren't Shimano's Look-type Dura Ace pedals "legacy" products until the excitement caused by their use on some Grand Tour winner's bike brought them back into production?
