Question about a Shimano 600 (double) clamp-on front mech I've been donated for the 'cross bike, which dates from round about the late 80s/early 90s (before they started branding them as 'Ultegra', at any rate) - will it handle an inner ring as small as 36T, or do I need to invest in a triple mech of some sort to cope with a ring below the usual Shimano minimum of 38T? I've used both Campag Mirage & Nuovo Record mechs with a 36T inner in the past, but have no similar experience of Shimano products to fall back on. All feedback gratefully received.

I am pretty sure it'll work with a 36, I used to use a 105 mech from 1990 on a 50/36 chainset.

I'd be happy to donate the 105 front mech (28.6 clamp on) if you or any one else want it. You pay the actual postage. I have two available, both well used/tatty but not used up. They'll be fine for a cheap winter bike.

On my old tourer I run a 600 with a 48 36 combination with no trouble - however how it would stand for racing I do't know.

It's not the size of the smaller ring that is important as much as the difference between the two rings.
You would need to check the model number (stamped on the derailleur body). Spec for the two models that were classified as "600" is:
FD-6400 Max difference 14T FD-6207 Max difference 18T
(The 6100, 6200 and 6300 were all 14T but these are pre 1985)

Thanks to all who posted replies; as it's the difference in ring sizes that counts, I should be in the clear, as the chainset I'll be fitting is a 46-36 double.
