Shimano Dura Ace 2004

Hi Kimi Iceman,

I have already ordered my new bike a Trek Madone 5.9 and have chossen Shimano's 2004 DuraAce gruppo, the local shop already have some of my components in, so i have now had the pleasure of holding the chainset and BB and the brake calipers, I have no doubts the time is right for me to change my "old" (3 years old) Trek 5500 with 9 spd DuraAce has done every thing faultlessly for me, but there was enough change and improvement in the new 10speed and Madone to convince me that I wanted them (wanted not needed). I cant wait to get the bike and ride it, delivery is 60-90days so it will be winter here in the UK, but I'm sure there will be enough dry if cold days to get a few rides in on it before the spring.
I have only used shimano on all my bikes so cant comment on its performance against Campy.
Cant say much more till I have ridden it.

one question:
right now i´ve got an older cycle with levers on the frame.
i´ve always thought, that your shifting down at this little button on the inside of the shimano brake/shift combination. but now some guy told me this is not right...where are you shifting down on your shimano dura ace?

Hi Kimi,
the little buttons found on the inside of the brake hoods are for the Flight Deck computer, sensors are fitted under these as part of the Flight Deck installation, this then allows the rider to easily scroll through the functions of the FD from the safety of the brake hoods.
The Sti units are made up of two levers mounted directly behind each other, by pulling the lever back towards the bar the function just like a traditional brake lever. However if you push the lever inwards from the outside edge, this makes the upshift (lower gears). If you make the same movement on the smaller lever mounted behind the brake lever this changes you down the block (higher gear), by make a wider sweep on either lever you can change up or down multiple gear changes, This is all much clear and simple when actually done on the bike. It also much safer and quicker than down tube shifters. New for 2004 is that the movement now follows a slight arc, when making the changes which follows the more natural movement of the hand.

no, really...hm...so your shifting up with the brakelever, and your shifting down with the lever behind the brakelever....hm...i didnt new that...shame on me... ;-)

well, what pedals are you using, and which you´re planing to use on your madone? i guess the shimano dura ace. nor? i´m gonna get the dura ace (the 2003 ones) for my new bike...

Yes Dura Ace I got the new pedals just a few months ago along with the Dura Ace shoes (now Shimano finaly make a wider fitting road shoe, I like support this wide platform gives, the shoe pedal combo is fantastic, even with a fully ridgid carbon sole, I have already had many long rides using them 70-100miles no problems at all, the give a much more direct power transfer

Madone, What model Shimono shoe did you settle on? I have the older R-122 model and they always hurt my feet after 50 miles or so. I plan on upgrading shoes and pedals for Spring 04.

I have a mate who works on a pro team in europe and he told me they have been having a lot of trouble with the BB's ???? not seen it myself but he is a reliable source.

Hi Wally I have the SH-R214, and find them to be the most comfortable cycling shoe I have ever used ( having used Sidi, Axa and Diadorra) the sole is fully rigid carbon, which gives excellent support to the whole foot, I no longer feel that presure point, where the foot rest above the contact area, and now feel that the whole of my foot is used in the pedaling action. I have done many 70-100 mile rides with this shoe pedal combo already, and would recomend them to anyone (rpoviding the fit suits you of course)

thanks for the info, I'll not get my bike for at least another 60days, but the shop have already got the Dura-Ace 10spd crank and BB in stock, I have spoken with them, and they have checked with Shimano, who have replied there are no nkown issues with the production components of 2004 Dura-Ace, could the problem have been with the Pro Teams pre-production test kit ?????
