Shimano bar end shifter problem

Go to the Shimano site.
Choose North America
Choose Cycling
Choose Technical Documents
Choose Shift Lever, under Dura Ace
Choose Exploded View for SL-BS78: 2004.
This will download a PDF document with exploded views
of the front and rear SL-BS78 10-speed bar end shift levers.

If this is not good enough, browse some more; maybe you will get
lucky.

Already been to that one. The assembly in question is shown as a single
part - no exploded view of it.

Thanks, but have already been there and spent a couple of hours searching.
All of the exploded views from Shimano show the subject assembly as a single
part. Their views show how that part fits into the overall assembly, but
not the individual pieces that make up the part. Guess they thought it
couldn't come apart.

If you have not solved this by tonight I can disassemble one of my
unused Shimano 9sp shifters and take a few pictures. Please let me knoe
if you need me to do that.

I'll be the one that asks...do you have a bike shop nearby that can
help??

There's one shop - a 65 mile round trip - that might be able to help. I
would not expect any such help from them without paying, and the cost of the
trip and a minimal charge would just about equal the cost of a replacement
part. Now, if this were a shifter for a farm tractor, I could walk to a
couple of places that would help for free! I seldom ask a question here
unless I've exhausted all other sources of info, and rarely get a good
answer when I do. Anyway, thanks for asking.

Monk - thanks very much for the offer, but I fear that if you disassemble
one and haven't done so before, you're going to be in the same fix as me,
although at least you'll know how the parts go together! I've tried a
couple of arrangements of the parts and it looks reasonable, but have been
unable to figure out how to reassemble it and get tension on the coil
spring. If, on the other hand, you're completely fearless and won't mind if
you can't get it back together, then I'd welcome the pictures. I'd also
happily publish the photos and procedure for reassembly on my website,
providing I can ever get it reassembled!

Having read all the articles in this thread that have reached my ISP's
news server I'm still confused. What model bar-end shifters do you
have? I'm not a professional bike mechanic, but I've worked on a
couple of bar end shifters in my time and I'm having a hard time
imagining what shifters require a large spring.
