Shimano Altus 6 speed

Shimano derailleurs are all compatible with each other (*), so you can use just about anything.
Either an alivio or sora would probably do you. (Alivio 18sq, sora 15sq from settle (long cage).
Alivio is probably the more direct replacement.)

(*) ok, 9 speed ones need the thinner jockey wheels, but just about anything will work with 6 speed.

I am quite new to bike maintenance - can anyone recommend a good book similar to the 'for dummies'
series for PCs which will help me to avoid expensive mistakes.

I believe Altus is a MTB groupset, any Shimano MTB derailleur will work. You need to ensure that the
capacity is compatible, that is if you have 32 teeth on the largest sprocket that the new mech
(derailleur) can handle 32 teeth.

The spacings are defined by the levers/shifters and the mulitplier(the amount of cable pull
translated to sideways movement) on the derailleur, AFAIK Shimano mulitpliers have always
been the same.

No problem, happy to help. I have no experience of the books you mention nor any other bike maint
book in the last 15 years, mine doesn't include indexed gears ! I pretty much learned by taking
things apart and putting them back together. Sheldon Browns site is useful, google for it.
