You oughtn't have cable slack; it should always have at least a little bit of tension. If you mean
your cable is too short...well, you know what to do about that. 😉

Maybe the derailleur hanger? I had similar problems with my Acera rear der and that was the issue.

Other than that, the Acera always worked very well for me; I had to upgrade when I got a cassette
with a 34 as the Acera I had couldn't go that high.

How about going the other way? Does it only step strangely in *one* direction? If it's misbehaving
in both directions, that sounds like something in the shifter on the handlebars, but I can't

It sounds like either the cable is sticking somewhere, or the der has a spot where it's stiff and
not moving freely. Dismount the chain and see if the der can swing through its full range smoothly.
If it doesn't, disconnect the cable and see if you can (carefully!) swing it through its full range
without it binding somewhere. Then pull on the end of the cable while running the shifter through
its range.

Could be a bent cog, a kinked shift cable, a shift cable outer with a bad cut (leaving enough
deformed housing to compress), or just really awful cable condition (rusty, dirty, etc.). You could
also have the cable anchored to the wrong side of the rear derailleur fixing bolt.

The derailer was a identicle replacent for the old derailer which was also a acera, I am trying to
think, i dont have the bike right here, its a friends and I cant check, but now that you guys said
it may be bad cables, I think i should check that. The hanger is fine.

Heres a little clarifacation: The derailer will shift correctly through 1,2,3,4 but not 5,6,7 they
wont work right and it skips 6th and doesnt really agree with 5th (not aligned right)

I can use the barrel adjuster to get 4,5,6,7 to work correctly but then i get problems with not
shifting into 2nd or 3rd and it will skip 2nd into 3rd, then ill shift to 1st and nothing happens.

What's caused that for me...
- Dirty cables (replace them rather than try to clean them).
- Bent DR hanger (tension arm should be parallel to the rim -- LBS can check and straighten easily).
- Worn jocky pullies (new DR, so this isn't the problem 🙂)
- Cable on the wrong side of the DR anchor bolt, or chinced on a really bad angle.
- Dirty chain or stuck link.
- Bent ring or tooth.
