Shimano 10 speed/9 Speed

AFAIK, they are the same physical width, just the cogs, and the spacers
are thinner, hence they cram 10 into the space of 9,and you need the
thinner 10 sp chain.

From what I know you can put a 10sp cassette on a 9sp hub but not a 9sp
cassette on a 10sp hub so my guess is the freehub body is wider on a 10sp.

onto a 10 speed hub. Confused. Hasn't anyone done this.

speccd as being 10sp compatible only as are its ultegra hubs i think. I
dont know whether that is just marketing speak for "buy our new
groupset" though....

Sheldon says it's only a problem for the Dura-Ace hub with an aluminium
freehub body and deeper splines.

Will a 9 speed cassette fit on a 10 speed hub ? Thats what I want to
know. I want to get a new wheel not new levers.

Weeeell, I have an Ultegra 10 speed cassette sitting here and it has
the deeper splines. I would assume that Shimano meant it to go on an
Ultegra hub. So I would think that an Ultegra 10s hub has deeper
splines, although I haven't actually seen one...

I can tell you that this Ultegra 10s cassette fits onto a "standard" 9
speed hub.

I'd go for the 105, but if you haven't got them yet, why don't you just
buy a wheel with a 9 speed hub?

No, the new Ultegra (6600 series) freehubs use the standard shallow
Hyperglide splines. The cassettes are made with the deeper spline pattern
to allow you to use them on the Dura Ace 7800 hub with the deep-splined
aluminium freehub body. It may be that Shimano are planning to extend the
Dura Ace freehhub design to the lowlier models in the future. Time will
tell.
