Shifter adjusting barrel

The way I see it, I could make fine adjustments at the rear deraileur anyway as there is a barrel adjuster at the RD. But for the FD, there is no fine adjustment and I might need it.

This things slowly unwind with vibration; in other words, they are a dead loss and require daily adjustment. You can either remove them or wind them completely down, compensating for this at the RD barrel.

So if I remove them, what can I do for adjustment at the FD?

Put a Shimano Cable Adjuster (SM-ST74 or SM-CS50) at the top of the down tube, where the outer cable stops. These are available from Shimano Aust through your LBS. 🙂

Thing is I do not have the mounting holes in the frame for those adjusters.

Thomas, I found that once I had the FD cable length/tension adjusted properly at the clamp, I haven't needed to touch it. I don't have any fine adjustment except for the inline thingy, which I leave completely loosened so that it can't stuff the system up. One day, I'll be bothered to get rid of it...
