denied support by the University.

Not really. The students want to join and run the clubs. They are being
denied support by the University.

Oooh, very unfair. I don`t know their exact situation but after being
once involved in Swansea University hiking club, I can make a few
guesses.

The AU don`t give a **** unless you are a competative club with the
ability to win stuff. If you are not a competative club, don`t expect
all the funding you need or the training you need (not even basic
first aid training!).
Insurance considerations may have forced leaders to get
qualifications, perhaps the AU refused funding.
Getting suitable people to lead walks is hard, we always tried to
train up and get people interested early on but the club now lacks
anyone competant to lead on say Dartmoor.
Getting drivers can be a real hassle. We used to book coaches for day
walks and take minibuses for weekends away, with numbers down, the AU
wont let us have a coach so finding drivers with a couple of years
experience can be hard.
Club membership fees have gone through the roof, it would have put me
off if I was still around.
AU club membership is down accross the board. Why is this? I don`t
know. Could be as students pay more in fees they lack funds to buy
kit, perhaps students are working harder or drinking harder.

Clubs have good years and bad years, I was lucky to be around during
some very good years. I met some great mates (just met up again in
the Austrian Alps), had some great times and realy got to know the
Brecons.

I undertand from comments on a web forum that it's more to do with the union
safety officer leaving and not being replaced by anyone with any kind of
knowledge of non-mainstream sports. That may just be a smokescreen, though.

| clubs who would no longer be eligible to receive funding.

Yes, apologies to any students reading. When we needed to get agency temps
in at one place I worked I specifically used to ask for students because
they were good workers. (Always used to specify no Welsh though).

As a female I love walking clubs cos it lets me see the bare legs
of so many gorgeous blokes. Sometimes those legs are so white;
how do they do that? You would think they would get a tan from all
that walking........
