  1. I don't know what came over me. I was dawdling around after picking up more
flash-frozen tilapia fillets and spotted a Mako shark steak. This sucker
weighs a pound and is an inch thick and it was cheap! I threw it in my
cart. Now, what to do with it? I can broil it and I also have a stovetop
grill (no, I'm not dragging the Weber out of the storage room in the cold
    rain, thank you.)

Yes, I will Google for recipes for shark steak. Got any suggestions?

Broiler would be my first choice. Lightly season and hit the flame. A hot
cast iron pan does well also.

Try a mexican seafood recipe...Shark is very good done in that style...At
least it was when I tried it in Cancun.

Use either the grill or the broiler, whichever you would do with a
swordfish steak of the same thickness. Accompany, garnish, whatever
just as you would have with swordfish.

Personally, I'm fond of barbecueing them. My parents did that
frequently with shark steaks as I was growing up.

A fresh shark steak is tasty, albeit with a hint of fishiness in
flavor. The fishiness, however, is complemented nicely by the right
sauce -- steak sauce on shark is actually not bad. Another advantage is
    that you get no bones.

Like any fish, don't cook too long unless you use low heat, lest it
    get tough or dry.

Since you nixed the grill, I'd broil it after sprinkling it with some
    "Dizzy Pig" Ragin River Rub.

Lacking a grill cook on a hot cast iron pan... do not remove the skin prior to
cooking... douche the shark steak with fresh lemon and season generously with
black pepper and mustard powder... place in fridge for an hour to macerate.
Shark is very lean so it sticks readily... so just prior to cooking slather
both sides with mayo. Shark has no bones, only a cartilage skeleton, and it
doesn't flake like other fish, and needs to be fully cooked (shark cooked to
opaque is like chewing latex). Serve with more mayo blended with prepared
horseradish and lemon... mako even when cooked properly is rather dry, so the
mayo is essential. Do not use butter with shark... yik.

  8. OT: Shark steak and mssenu.
Quick story. Nephew came to visit. He had been in the service, stationed on the
Red Sea. He's a swimmer, got some friends to row a boat behind him as he swam
a 13 mile stretch of the Red Sea. About 3 miles from the other side

    something hit
him and knocked him about 12 feet backward--his hand was in the shark's mouth
up to his elbow. Was being jerked around and pulled under water. His
companions, in the meantime, thought he had been swallowed, the beast was so
big.it could have swll They were hitting the shark with their oars.Somehow
nephew hit him in the eye and snout with his good arm. He got free, was pulled
into the boat by his friends, got to shore. He was taken to a Tel Aviv
hospital, where he got good care.Stayed a week or more.

It's pretty good blackened. I have had shark a few times. It's not bad. It's
    pretty meaty stuff.

in a boat to support him.Just two miles from the opposite shore he was hit and
shoved 12 feet backwards, It was a huge
shark, so giant that his friends thought he had been swallowed whole and were
beating the beast with their oars. He was held under water and shaken
Hard....... He was finally freed and taken to a Tel Aviv hospital where he
stayed for about 10 days. The arm was badly sliced, deeply and took a long time
to heal. ---so, I take him out to dinner and he orders---- shark !! I couldn't
believe it. SO_O_ Guess what he ordered for dinner--shark of course. The
    waiters couldn't believe it.
I couldn't order shark under any circumstances--I might find some man's big toe

That's what I was thinking, Ed. Any herb/seasoning suggestions other than

Yep, it looks almost like a beef steak. Very little skin or cartilage on
it. I might try it with some "blackening" seasonings on it.

They've had all those blends for years. Back before most people even knew
    what a tsunami was/is.
Should they discontinue their line? What about all the bars and
restaurants that sell Hurricane drinks? People have been killed in
hurricanes. Should they re-name the drinks too? What a narrow minded way
    to be.

LOL Bob, you sure don't know me. I love Hurricanes (the drink) and choose
to live not only where tornados are prevalent but also earthquakes. And
since I was able to read, I have known what a tsuanmi was (read: Tidal
Wave). I am not in the least narrow-minded. I do think they should perhaps
call their spice blend "Big Wave" 😉
