  1. Shane Gould, winner of 3 three swimming gold medals at
    the 1972 Olympics, is competing in the Australian Olympic
    selection trials currently being held in Sydney. Shane
    will be swimming in the heats of the 50M butterfly on
    this Thursday.

    swimming business? If she were, it wouldn't be in keeping
    with the spirit of the Olympic movement, right?

  9. Shane is a legend. Not only did she do this event, she also
    swam the Rottness channel in Perth with one of our para-
    olympic swimmers in February as a duo (10km each). If you
    look at the photos of her meet at the Australian swimming
    site, you'll see that she's wearing her local swim club cap.
    She is "not" an Olympic sell out in anyway.

    Shane is not a professional competitive swimmer (are there
    any?). She's a professional swim instructor.

    The old rule against participation by professionals applied
    to people who were competing in their sports as
    professionals. It has always been recognized that Olympic
    competitors have to have a means of supporting themselves.
    I've never heard of anyone being barred from Olympic
    swimming because they were employed as a lifeguard, either.

    Not so - there was a time when any money received through
    sport, beit sweeping the pool deck, teaching, lifeguard or
    even playing another sport for cash, would proclude you from
    swimming in amateur competition.
