Does anyone here intentionally refrain from sex the night before an important race? Boxing trainers were legendary for making their boxers refrain for weeks before a fight, claiming it made them meaner and more aggressive. This theory is now generally considered an old wive's tale (excuse that pun), but a lot of old wive's tales contain a kernel of truth. I think quite a few athletes in many different sports still abide by it.

Funny. I was just reading an old back issue of men's journal from 2005 where they asked Lance Armstrong this question. In summary, go ahead and get busy... -
I found sex as a warm up for a triathlon quite useful. 😉 As long as one is not late for the swim leg.

I try to refrain from racing before sex. This regime brought about an early end to my racing career. Now that I have been married for many years, I can stick to the same regime, and yet am free to race as much as I want... 🙄

Ther was a British science television show- dont remember the exact name- but they put this theory to the test.
the took a football squad and had them play until half time. Every player was analysed and graded as to time with ball, shots taken, successful defense, etc.
At half time- half the squad was sent away to ahhh.... "get busy with their significant other".
With half time over and half the team feeling a bit more "relaxed" than the other.... they continued the match.
at the end, the analysis showed a marked improvement in the team which was sent away for extra curricular activities during the half time break.
higher point total, more shots on goal, better defense, every player was rated higher in the second half.
They attributed it to perhaps an elevation in testosterone but more likely to a relaxed confidence... so more of a mental/psychological boost than a physical change.
interesting.

I could stand less racing myself. 😄

Sean Kelly used say when he raced that he abstained from sex completely.
Given that he used race from february to october, that's an awful lot of abstention!

Good point. I find that abstaining from sex with Heidi Klum has no positive benefit.

Fair enough, but he also refrained from drinking alcohol for years. Isn't that illegal where you are from? :p -

Yeah but he's Irish. We Irish have a completely fuc*ed up viewpoint on sex. Ever hear of St. Magdalene's laundries? How about the Catholic church? The Pope? Alcohol? Condoms? Irish twins?
It's an old wives' tale, my friend. Fuc* all you want. It's very healthy with the right person. But still get to bed early the night before the race!
