  1. The TdF guide with the latest C+ mentions live coverage of the first 2
stages on ITV1. I was really looking forward to it. I've just looked
through the paper and they're actually showing Coronation Street when I
was expecting to see stage 1, and Poirot when I was expecting to see
    stage 2.

The ITV website confirms that I'll have to wait until the small hours of
Tuesday morning to video coverage of the first 3 stages. The live
coverage I was so looking forward to is actually on ITV2.

    Not happy.

I'll second that. A major sporting event and they shove it off onto ITV2.
I think it's a disgrace! I might even have to find out how to get it, not
that I really want it apart from occasionally feeling I'm missing something
due to not having it. In this case I definitely am!

I _think_, from a post up there somewhere ^, that you're referring to
a digital terrestial tv receiver. Which is a bit of a mouthful.

And now back to our regular broadcast.

Just think yourselves lucky you don't expect to see equestrianism on
terrestrial tv! I mean it's one of the few things we actually do well in
at the Olympics (and a Brit won the Grand Slam last year) so God forbid
anyone should show it in favour of football. But I know what you mean
about the parsity of so called minority sports.

I might even do that, some time, though I'm not all that keen on getting
it just for one annual event.

I decided a couple of months ago that we'll probably need a new
television within the next year or so. We decided long ago that our
next television would be a digital one, but after a quick look round it
doesn't appear that you can actually *buy* digital televisions yet. It
seems I'll still have to get an analogue one and buy a box to go on top
of it. Then I'm not sure about the practicality of videoing stuff on
digital, which is pretty important since I very seldom watch anything at
    the time it's actually broadcast.

You can probably tell that I haven't looked into it very deeply yet. I
have a friend who is bound to know lots about it. He's coming round for
a barbecue this afternoon, so I shall have to remember to quiz him about
    digital television.

It has had the added advantage here in that the analogue signal for Channel
Five is cr*p. Via Freeview, though, the picture is excellent. It was pleasant
to watch the Lance Armstrong interview last night via a clear picture instead
    of via fog :-)

Yup its potentially a fair bit of money...

Most Freeview boxes can be taped with VHS tape recorders. But, unless you're
lucky, your VHS recorder cannot set the channel on the Freeview box
automatically (unlike normal VHS recording of analogue programmes where the
recorder sets its own tuner channel).

There are some (two?) hard-disk based video recorders on sale, starting at
around £200. These allow you to record the Freeview programme to the hard
    drive whilst watching another.

Wrong! Tv's with digital tuners are readily available. Videoing off mine
    works fine.

Freeview box.Available for £50+ from High St. retailers(Comet do them
for £50,you may get one cheaper if you look around).5 minutes to set it
up, and worth the money just for BBC3 + 4, and of course, TDF coverage on
    ITV2.

Er. Every major manufacturer is selling digital televisions. Sony,
    Panasonic etc etc.

Or just grab a settop box from Argos.

(Nb; the *television* bit is still analogue, regardless of the source
of the input signal! You can buy digital and non-digital versions of
the same TV model often -- some people prefer to buy a non-digital
(cheaper) and put their own settop box in as a digital-TV
source. That's the route we took...)

My parents-in-law have had one for a few years now.

I'd still go for the box solution though - it means you can record a digital
programme while watching another on analogue, and I don't need to program my
tv or leave it on. (other way round works with digital TV).

The analogue output on ours is tuned to be a different channel to the two
videos, so it goes Aerial - set top box - video 1 - video 2 - TV (the three
bits in the middle have aerial in/out), so we can watch or record whatever
we like with the caveat that we only have one digital channel at a time.
(video 2 is optional - merely a historical accident that we have two).

    cheers,
    clive

Although you will find from time to time that the sound and the
pictures get way out of synch on digital while they're still perfectly
    together on analogue.

AIUI you only get to watch a weekly synopsis (Tuesdays)on ITV1, and
ITV2 is the middle of the night highlights that ITV1 had last year.
Sky are promising a free dish end of the year, but without British
Eurosport on it you won't see any live coverage. I'm a bit loathe to
get the dish, once you've all bought it they can in theory take all
the free channels off and make you pay.

I find having the sound and pictures out of sync (which seems to be fairly
frequent here on analogue) to be quite annoying. Being a litlte bit
musically inclined I get frustrated at a concert when there is significant
lag between vision and sound (eg at the back of a medium/large concert
hall.) I end up closing my eyes and the people I am with think I am asleep.

I'm not asleep, honest, unless I am snoring.

TBH, the TDF is pretty boring apart from a major climb, or in the last 10
    minutes of the stage.
If it was live, I certainly wouldnt watch the flat stages.I like watching

Yes I've just woken up from watching the France 2 coverage and have a

miss the podium girls which are one of the best parts. :-)

I think watching a whole stage must be harder than riding it.
