You really have to wonder about a Director who doesn't believe in his
own team, especially one with this level of talent and potential. You
have to wonder what Riis or Johan could do with the T-Mobile personnel.
I's guarantee they wouldn't be accepting racing for second after the
prologue. That's for damn sure.

But the Ullrich camp has gained power within the team obviously.
Anticipating his own retirement, Walter does well telling the truth. Because
too few people in the T-M camp are making Jan face the facts.

He lost it to Pantani at Les Deux Alpes in 1998, the stage where
UDO is supposed to have told him to 'suffer, you swine'. He has
never re-found it.

"lost it to Pantani" might be an understatement. If I recall correctly
he lost 2nd place to Julich that day too. It was a rough day for Jan,
but he did fight back bravely after that.

Maybe 1997 was the aberration, not the other way around, with Ullrich being
an "interim" champion--like Roche, Delgado, Riis--between eras of dominant
riders. Everyone assumes that because he won at a young age, the failure to
win subsequent TdFs is a result of lack of effort and commitment.
Personally, I think that, during the Armstrong era, second place is as good
as he could have ever hoped to achieve.

Looks to me that while bad news and criticism make Armstrong mad, they
just discourage Ullrich. Wish it weren't so, the Tour would be more
exciting otherwise, but it appears that's the way it is.
