No idea... but I've tried a variety of dishwashing liquids over time,
and can highly recommend Ajax for cutting grease. :-)

Netgrocer.com has it, if you can't find it locally. There's
probably a better place to buy it on the Net, but that's the

At least it's just one brand that disappeared. In my supermarket, an entire
category has vanished. They no longer sell powdered laundry detergent. They
only have liquid now. Very strange.

I like the Electosol "3 in 1" tabs. Convenient. I buy the large
container from Sam's or the commissary at a decent price and I'm not
fighting to get the last drops out of a bottle of gel or liquid and nor
am I spilling bits of powder around.
For handwashing I keep the smallest bottle of detergent I can find at
the sink. Lately it has been Dawn brand. I don't like to see huge
honkin' bottles of detergent sitting out, but do want it handy. I'll
refill my small bottle as needed from the larger bottle below.

Got hard water in your area? If so, powdered detergent probably isn't very
popular, except with people who either have water softeners, or love clogged
pipes.

I looked for it earlier when I went to the supermarket, they had
it. Under it was a sticker, look what's new. Maybe they changed
the packaging?

I can't believe you said that. I've mentioned that a couple of times
in the last few months. No coupons, it's not on sale at anywhere I
shop, and it's taking up less and less shelf space. I just brought it up
last week when I got my new washer, they included a Tide brochure,
all liquid bottles. On the bottom, in small letters, it said available in
powder. I'm happy I can find regular Tide still.

If you've used it consistently for years, you must have noticed the
changes it's been through in the last decade. The scent is different,
the color and consistency are different, and it's become quite
disquieting to the hands... and even if you buy the "original formula"
the product is not the *original*.

It disappeared from the markets around here a while ago, then reemerged
as the two separate "new" and "original" formulas. Neither of them is
any good. The only decent liquid dish detergent I've been able to find
is Palmolive green... no apple or citrus or tropical or floral scents,
please.

Once upon a time I was able to find Dermassage, but that has
disappeared, too.

take baked on grease off an engine block.

It's only mid range hard. I've never had a problem with it. For the past 15
years, this supermarket has stocked powdered laundry detergent and then it
vanished sometime within the last 6 months. I don't know exactly when
because I tend to buy on sale and only recently needed to get some more. I
haven't checked other stores in the city yet. I was wondering if it had
something to do with any new phosphate limits locally or something like
that.

That was LAUNDRY detergent I was talking about! ;-)

I also only use powdered dishwasher detergent, but for a different reason. I
don't go through dishwasher detergent very fast since I only run the machine
2-3 times a week. And I like to buy on sale. I've found that the liquid
dishwasher detergent separates with age, and in fact there is a warning on
the bottle to that effect. When it separates, the thin liquid would leak
right out of the detergent dispenser during the pre-rinse part of the cycle,
resulting in dirty dishes.

I recently saw a new (at least to me) Dawn product -
you dispense it with a pump and I think they call it a
foam. The contents were blue and looked like the usual
stuff, but when you pump the product, it comes out looking
like baby spittle. It seemed to work adequately.

Sounds like a gimmick I can do without. I can squeeze out a smidgeon of
detergent on to my wet sponge and go at the few things I need to wash
just fine without pricey foam to help me. 🙂

I don't read EVERYTHING that is posted! ;-)

I just checked the online store of both my regular supermarket (Safeway) and
that of the other major chain in the area (Giant), using my zipcode. Both
still have plenty of choices of powdered laundry detergent. So I guess it's
probably just my regular supermarket rather than the chain dropping it or
any regulation. I presume if there was some rule (such as phosphate level),
they wouldn't list it for sale for my zipcode.

I don't know what it costs since I was helping a neighbor
do the dishes after dinner. I wouldn't buy it because I didn't
care for its appearance.

Use gloves. And by the way, in terms of laundry detergent (although the OP
was talking about *dishwashing* liquid) I don't want my clothes to smell
like mangos. Thanks but no thanks. And Nancy, I do prefer liquid laundry
detergent. I've been living with apartment complex washers long enough to
hate the friggin dry Tide clumps that don't come out in the rinse cycle.
