Some of us have been known to twist a friends arm into doing
just that - when the bike has become unrideable, and one is
too lazy to carry it the six miles to ones LBS on foot.

Indeed some of us do as a means of transporting the competitive cyclist in
the family to & from cycling events. What we do do when overtaking is make
sure we give those we are passing a wide berth....

Just sitting behind a steering wheel does wierd and nasty things to the
mind - even to cyclists who would normally be fine upstanding citzens :-(

Can you still get them? I used to use them on my motorcycle luggage
carrier as well as on my fron wheel.
