  1. Last Sunday I did my first century on the recumbent, and today I rode the second. A nice easy ride:
100.01 (!) miles at an average of 13.2 mph. Max speed 42.2 (woo-hoo!) - would have gone faster but
    for a navigation point.

Saw lots of other groups out cycling, including one lot who got into an argument with the proprietor
at the Deep Mill Diner. The service was surly beyond imagining! Lunch at the George & Dragon,
Quainton - very highly recommended. Lovely people, good food, sensible prices, and those who sampled
    the beer pronounced it excellent.

The route was good, not to hilly - out via Bray, Burnham, Missenden, Aylesbury, and back via Thame,
Benson and Checkendon. Only needed the little ring going up the side of the Chilterns - and the
wedgies didn't see because they were so far behind ;-)

Challenged to a "sprint to the pub" from a mile and a half out. Arrived in time to wander over to
the village green, say hello to one of the club who was joining us directly from home at the lunch
stop, return to pub and park the bike. Those recumbents - can't climb worth a damn you know.

I've done a few recumbent centuries in the last 15years, in total I estimate my recumbent mileage
total to be around 250,000 miles, I haven't ridden a wedgie for about 3years and whenever someone
mentions cycling I always consider "benting" to be the norm, I could never go back to wedgie riding.
I am at 6 weeks without using the car so far, maybe I should run the engine.

Truth were told, I'm kind of jealous really.

Just out of interest, what bent do you ride? Sounds like something that can move. Some kind of
    lowish SWB?

    Thank you for asking :-)

    It's an Optima Stinger - see optima-cycles.nl2 10 1.htm

Are you *really* sure? An error of +/- 0.5% on a bike odometer is pretty good. This means you could
have done "only" 99.51 miles >:-> Don't worry though, just to be on the safe side you can have the
0.49 miles I did on my unicycle this weekend.

    Have fun!

List is a shade under £1500 IIRC, but I bought some extras. Now it also has a SON fitted it is
    insured for about £1750.

Well, in truth, we should actually allow for 100% error. I did 0 miles as I didn't get the unicycle
out this weekend, it was last weekend but I rode at least a mile and I was allowing for a weeks
worth of depreciation. However any distance on a unicycle is equal to at least twice that distance
on a recumbent due tot the extra effort, so it should tip Guy over the 100 mile mark no problem :-)

I should finally be able to get out to do some decent unicycling/biking/climbing this weekend as our
flat should go to a closing date on Friday. No more doing up the flat and no more sitting around
waiting for people to view the flat! Yay!

    Have (relieved) fun!

I just bougth one of these (partly because of reading Guy's homepage several times, thanks Guy). It
comes in a very beautifull red color, and is a biiig pleasure riding! Im around 400km now (about 250
miles). And I find it very easy to ride, even at low speeds and tight corners and in the city
traffic too. I have mounted a very nice flag. Inspired by the danish flag with red backgroud and a
big white cross (made of reflective tape).

But I have to get the gearing changed too, as 30mph is the fastest I can spin it up to and it feels
like its possible to get quite some more out of it.

If you get near one, try it!

    Regards,

    Anders

I have two cassettes, an 11-32 wide range and a 12-25 close ratio. The 12-25 gives me better average
speeds, but the 11-32 is better on hills
    :-)

I can't spin at much over 120rpm so I usually coast above 37mph.

I have plans to change to the 11-32 soon too, as a start. And then maybe get the 65T chainring from
Optima to exchange with the 61T thats on the bike now. But i'm not sure wether that can be done. On
their homepage it is described as a chainring with protection on both sides, and I have not asked
them yet if the protection can be removed from the inside. And I think it will wait till the 61T is
worn out so I have to order something anyway. I expect that to be in a year or so.

    Anders

You should be able to get either from local bike shops I guess. Waiting until it wears out might be
a problem, though - the rings on mine are TA, and they last for ever ;-)

BTW, have you got the new modified frame with strengthening fillet at the headset? See this thread:

For ever sounds nice :-) I'll check out my local bike shops, but none of them carries recumbents and
a 65T is a lille big for most other bikes I know.

Well, it doesn't tell on the bike, but it was build 1 month ago, so I suspect it is the newest
design they have. I hope so...

Another question. I recall that you migth use the bike box from Ortlieb? If that is correct, do you
use it on the Stinger? And if you use it at all, do you find it big and handy enough for daily use?
If you don't use it at all, and I have remembered the wrong guy, sorry for the stupid question.

    Have a nice day,

Easy to tell: there's a fillet under the frame at the head tube.

    Yes, yes and yes :-)

I fitted the top of a Blackburn-close rack onto the built-in Stinger rack and mounted the Bike Box
quick release on that. It works just fine. The Bike-Box is completely waterproof and big enough to
take sandwich box, shirt, trousers, shoes, waterproof and toolkit.
