  1. First things first... all prices mentioned are in $AU.

Two frames in the local classifieds this week. 5200 and 5500. $1500 and $1800 respectively. Both apparently 2004 models.

Assuming they are the right size, would you consider either of these as a first road bike? If so which....

    Many thanks

    Grant

  2. I have no experience with the 5200, but the 5500 would make a darn nice first road bike.

The 5200 is more than enough for a first bike.Probably more frame than 90% will ever fully use. Anything more is just buying bling and poseur' points.

  4. Yeah, I wouldn't pay the $4500 for a new one but I figure if I can pick one up on the cheap then why not?

I can keep riding my hybrid while I buy the componentry to go on it. Then I'll have myself a nice ride. I didn't know if either of the bikes was more suited to a particular type of riding/racing. Can't seem to get onto the Trek site to view their bikes for some reason.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.

Geometry is identical,as is frame material. The 5500 gets the more upscale Bontrager x lite fork.Otherwise the difference is the parts spec when built as complete bikes. They are race bikes and size is measured to top of an extended seattube, with a relatively low headtube. Some aren't able to get the bars high enough with them without resorting to goodfy solutions like a humongus spacer stack riser stems or even steerer extenders( ).Alot of people buy them for the wrong reason and then gripe about bad fit issues.

  6. $1500 is about $1070 US. That seems to be a pretty good price for a carbon frame, but I'm pretty sure the warranty is only valid for the original owner.

Have you considered Cervelos? I just bought the steel model ("Superprodigy"😉 which I really like, and Cheeky Monkey are having a huge sale on all their 2004 Cervelos http://www.cheekymonkey.com.au/mulhome.htm

I just paid $1700 AUS for the frame & fork (with seat post and head-set), and the whole bike is now $2900 with Ultegra, which I think is pretty good.
