I will give a brief, on-topic reply, and then request follow-ups to email.

At the time of the incident, I was not downtown, but at a meeting at the
University of Washington. After the meeting, I got on my bike and rode down
to Montlake where you can put your bike on the bus so that you may cross the
lake (the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge is closed to non-motorized
traffic). It's a very busy place to load a bike, and another cyclist and I
filled up the rack. When we got on the bus, it was packed. Downtown was in
the process of being shut down to all traffic, and so it was crammed with
standing riders. It was then that I heard of the shooting. Having managed
the bond issue for the Jewish Federation (including their upgraded security
system) and knowing a few people who work there, I was understandably upset.
I appreciate having the resource of the bike to work off anxiety and to
focus on other concerns. If I had been driving, I would have stewed in a
car, listening to the news. Instead, after unloading the bike at the transit
station near Microsoft, I had to pay attention to thick rush-hour traffic,
to get myself home.

i see it was a big media event. there have been shootings in seattle almost
every day this summer. for the past three weeks we have seen at least one
mass shooting or shootout per week. someone told me a stat last week that
there were a lot of shooting deaths in seattle this summer and he said "6
just this month". 6? heh. more like 20! it's really becoming very upsetting.

Some of you may remember that there were arrests at the previous Critical
Mass in Seattle. Many anticipated a heated, confrontational event this month
in response. The Critical Mass was scheduled to occur at 5:30 on Friday
downtown, almost exactly when the streets were being closed in response to
the shooting.

The Seattle P-I had an article, the start of which I'll reprint here:

The last time hundreds of bicyclists took to the streets of downtown Seattle
for the monthly Critical Mass demonstration, they were stymied by law
enforcement.
This time, there were no problems and instead the bicyclists worked with law
enforcement.

As about 300 bicyclists massed at Westlake Park about 6 p.m. Friday, Seattle
police had much of their normal course downtown shut down because of the
shootings at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.

Seattle police Capt. Lanny Black went up to a few of the riders, as there
are no leaders and no set route in the monthly ride for the rights of
bicyclists. "I could really use your help," he said, and asked that they
avoid the area around the shooting.

The bicyclists, despite last month's run-in with undercover King County
sheriff's deputies, have said they always had a good relationship with the
Seattle police, who normally take a hands-off approach toward the
demonstration.

So the bicyclists complied. A couple said they'd try to get in the front and
steer them away, and the riders headed south through downtown, away from the
shootings, and eventually to Seward Park. Later, police spokeswoman Sgt.
Deanna Nollette said there were no incidents; the bicyclists made their
point about having a right to be on the streets, without incident.

Several of the bicyclists said they were first-timers, drawn to the ride
this time as a show of solidarity.

Virginia Cottman, 29, said when asked why the bicyclists stayed away from
the crime area, "We don't want to get in the way and be responsible for
slowing an emergency vehicle from reaching somebody."

wow... i haven't heard about the other shootings that much, but now that
you mention it I think i remember one in the news not too long ago. As
for it being senseless etc... let's face it, is there any such thing as
a thoughtful or non-tragic shooting? Wait, let's not answer that... LOL.
It's like a crash... we all say 'it was SO stupid." As opposed to a
smart, well thought out crash?

Wasn't there just some big murder trial in seattle? Not green river, but
some kind of family massacre or something? I have to go look this up...

That is all I do have is a sense of decency - which is why these freaking
newsgroups are driving me stark raving mad.

Claire is a gadabout. That is the worst kind of woman there is. She ought to
stay home and take care of her husband and children. Surely there are enough
chores for her to do in the kitchen, the bedroom and the church (synagogue
in her case) to keep her busy. Why must she flaunt herself in the public
square. That is reserved for us men.
