  1. I'm going to be in Seattle the first week of August, and am thinking about bringing my bike with me.
Any decent rides going on that week, or on the weekends? I hear about all these bike trails/paths
too, is there anywhere I can get a map or two beforehand?

    Thanks!

Mark, you have several options in front of you.

First, if you're interested in club rides, go here: cascade.orgcascade.org. Under "Rides", click on
More Daily Rides. This will give you the listings for rides in August. I see rides listed right now
during the first week ranging from less than 20 miles at "leisurely" (10-12 mph), to 80 miles at
"brisk" (16-18 mph). You can just show up at the start point with your bike and ride along.

The Seattle Bicycle Club also has rides: seattlebicycle.comseattlebicycle.com

If you'd rather explore on your own, several maps are available both on-line and in a dead-trees
version for free. Go here: cascade.orgGetting Around.cfm to get an exhaustive
list of websites and addresses for bicycle maps.

If you won't have a rental car with you, you can load your bike on to Metro Transit for no
additional cost above the regular fare. This can help you get from your hotel to the trail or ride
start. You can find out more here:

    transit.metrokc.govloadbike.html and
    transit.metrokc.govtimetables.html

Hope this is helpful. Enjoy your stay in Seattle!

I don't live in Seattle (anymore) and don't have any maps, but I went on a nice ride when up there
last summer on the Lake Washington bike path that extends from the area of the University of
Washington half-way around the Lake to Redmond...about a 40 mile out and back. I was told the path
goes on to Lake Sammamish. There's a few residential cross roads to deal with on west side of Lake
Washington, but the path is quite nice on east side. I didn't use a map, but caught the bike path in
the Sand Point area at the point where it runs parallel to San Point Way NE of the University at
about 47th Ave NE ....not sure exactly where it starts. I had a nice ride and had a chance to chat
along way with local cyclists curious about my Death Ride jersey.

  4. I think there is map available from Metro that they will mail out. I don't have their URL but I'll
try to find it for you.

  6. Cool, I'm arriving by ship, and figured I'd bring the bike along and do some riding while I
    was up there.

  7. If you stay in Seattle there is lots of hills and cool city stuff to see. If you want to go on a
gravel trail in the mountains, the Iron horse trail is easy and fun with some very nice non/car
    campsites along the way too.
