Another english old pro who's still racing is Malcolm Elliot. He races the Ras here each year. he's in great shape too - he almost won the points jersey last year and was in contention for overall GC.

I had a friend who rides a bit and was recently in Piccadilly Circus going to some dodgy Sports Cafe for a few beers and out the front was Malcolm Elliot’s pro team.....! They were doing some sort of shonky presentation…. He got Malcolm's picture card and true to form Malcolm still looks like a rock star with the blonde flowing locks and tanned skin... although looking more like a Rolling Stone as there is a few Clint Eastwood styled wrinkles on the face.... he would be mid 40's now would he not ?

I met him last year at the Ras - nice bloke : but I agree he has the appearance of a Def Leppard guitarist. He's still in great nick.
If he's a prolific as they say he is off the bike - I wonder where he gets the energu on the bike !

Who else was in that team from 1988 ? They had a big budget a lot of good riders but really didn't produce much with Roche injured most of the year....
I know LeMond was having a hellish year at PDM that year... think it was his comeback year.... kept getting dropped off the back in every race he did.... his bad form went all thw way through to the 89 Giro where he was about 40 mins back and started taking iron injections (he speaks openly about this).... he then drilled the final time trial at the Giro and then the rest is history......

In 88, you had Yates, Millar, Roche, Elliot, Johnny Weltz, Eddie Schepers on that team. In 89, Yates, Millar and Elliot left Fagor - Paul Kimmage and Vincent Lavenu joined. As did Francesco Rossignoli.
LeMond was in bits in 88 (after the accident) : he could barely finish a stage race. 89 his form came back - beat Kelly at Chambery in the rain too (bugger)
Eddie Schepers ! Never left Roche's side during the 87 Giro and Tour... what a rider..... from memory when the Carrera team was combusting at the 87 Giro it was Roche & Schepers V the rest of the team... Roche won...... ahhhh the glory days of cycling.... 🙂

Chambery 1989 : leMond won the world title, Kelly gave up second place to Dimitri Konyschev and Kelly came in third. Kelly was gutted : had the wrong gear setup. Not taking away from leMond though.
Spot on re:Scheppers and the Giro. Sheparded Roche. As did Robert Millar - even though Millar was on a different team, he and Roche were close from the ACBB/Peugout days. Millar went out of his way in the Giro that year.
Doh ! World Champs of course.... LeMond a great ride.... when I get the time remind me to tell the story of Alan Pieper wanting to put LeMond into the barriers as a junior for wheel sucking.......
......btw/ from memory Roche still had to wear the Peugeot knicks in 1997 in the Carrera outfit.... a long standing contract agreement was it not ? They had nice bikes as well.... red, white and blue... great paint jobs..... every photo of Roche in 97 you'd see the arm or leg of Scheppers right beside him or in front.....
Kelly would of still being using the toeclips in 89, no ? I'm not sure if he ever went clipless..... ???

According to the CS special edition on SK (November 1994 - the first time ever CycleSport did a special edition for one rider), Sean first went clipless in 1992! In the interview with CS - Kelly said that he simply couldn't get used to the clipless sensation - despite having tried it.
And you're right Roche had to wear the Peuguot shorts with the Carerra jersey. I'd forgotten that! Schepers was a great domestique to Roche - in his biog, Roche says that he could never ask for anything more for Schepers.
